Leyla Diamondi never planned to release her new single “Broken Pieces”, instead using the songwriting process merely as a means to feel “completely exposed, vulnerable, bold and open,” she explains. “I felt in the past I was hiding behind production because I was afraid to be honest. “Broken Pieces” has given me strength and self-trust. I used to put up walls to feel safe because I was afraid of being rejected, but now I have come to realise that being open and fluid, like water, is so much more powerful.”
Thank god the 23-year-old did tear those walls down, as we can now add the statuesque tear-jerker to our heartbreak playlists, offering enough musical solace to last a lifetime. Diamondi’s breath-taking, almost-operatic vocals are the pièce de résistance of her second single of the year, with the half-Greek, half-Turkish singer at first appearing powerless before crescendoing into a towering display of resilience, complemented by otherworldly string arrangements, and an intricate piano line that’s radiance only punctures through the track’s beauty after a few listens.
