“I started to feel more disassociated from society,” explains Dirty Versachi, “and more alien.” It was a feeling harboured after the non-binary and drag artist was told to mute their queerness if they wanted to succeed in the industry. They had been producing and writing for 10 years under the name Ven X, however, these moments would prove the genesis of the unstoppable, Dirty Versachi.
The qualities of alien identity aren’t far from our consciousness just now, following queen Bey’s recent “Alien Superstar” – a multi-faceted pop song on a cosmic scale, both grandiose and earnest, and with a beating heart of queerness. An ode to ballroom culture, the community, and embracing oneself in a world in which belonging isn’t a given, it’s that same dynamite Versachi has channelled into the liberating single “Rainbow Light Beam”.
“I wanted ‘Rainbow Light Beam’ to feel like a repetitive mantra that encapsulates the desire to be free and to disassociate with everything that is happening around you,” they say. “I also wanted it to feel queer, spacey and out of this world!”. The irresistible club track is their fourth single under the moniker, and first of the year, following three 2021 releases that disrupted the Australian music scene, receiving an array of Spotify playlist spots and drawing plays from leading alternative music station, Triple J.
