From endless swiping – be that to the left or right – to the late-night “U up?” texts, nearly every aspect of dating has been trivialised by the virtual sphere. The rapid rise of the internet happened almost overnight, meaning that many have all fallen victim to its unforgiving grasp. But, artist Celestial Skies is taking a stand and asking us to abandon our beloved cellular devices on new track, “The Lost Art of Conversation”. Inspired by Netflix’s Heartstopper, and directed by Darius Shu, the music video for this particular track takes us into a world of spontaneity and surprise as it explores the blossoming innocence that comes with the beginning of a queer love story, contrasted with the distraction that modern technology presents. “Without wanting to sound hypocritical, I do think phones are brilliant,” Celestial Skies, aka Chris Selman, explains. “I just know way too many people who are more focused on trying to capture the moment, rather than actually living in the moment, and I think that’s a shame. So, I thought I’d write about it.”

Sonically, “The Lost Art of Conversation” is lighthearted and whimsical. Despite the song confronting the lack of face-to-face socialising in today’s society, the production process itself brought friends back together and away from the grips of their phones. Figures from Selman’s university years, to those the singer-songwriter made throughout their career were all united through the track’s making – a touching tribute to its core theme. Upbeat riffs prompt us to appreciate the subtle interactions shared with a prospective love interest, from the first glance to the first conversation over a cup of coffee, which culminate in the initial sparks felt by young lovers.

“The Lost Art of Conversation” comes from Celestial Skies’ highly anticipated debut album, Songs For Blue Romantics, along with their debut track “Forget Me Not”. Head below to enjoy…
