KENZO SS23

The label captures the 1980s Japanese view of Parisian couture for their SS23 runway collection.

Young in spirit and innovative in perspective, Kenzo’s SS23 show certainly did not disappoint. Created to fit a wardrobe for everyday life, the collection takes an enduring approach to fashion — in which Nigo builds on the ethos that defined his inaugural show. Merging multiple cultural lenses while transitioning through the retro stylings of the 80s, the collection is at once unique, complex yet captivating — as exemplified by the star-studded guest list that sat to bear witness to its explosive runway debut.

Featuring pinstriped cropped blazers, relaxed cotton two-pieces, royal colour palettes and nautical accessories, the show paid a sizeable homage to the iconography of Kenzo Takada — capturing Parisian style through a Japanese lens. While maritime influences can be detected throughout – whether it be the soft-top hats, navy blue and white colour schemes and the tangible incorporation of stripes – the collection nods to the 1980s Japanese view of Parisian couture. Most specifically, the capsule aims to de-and-reconstruct the maritime uniform — making it translatable and trendy for modern-day wearers.

Decked out in their own Kenzo outfits, the likes of Justin Timberlake, Cruz Beckham, Jaden Smith and Chloe Cherry took front-row seats to witness the main event — demonstrating Kenzo’s innate ability to transcend every generation and profession, creating community with their evolutionary approach to fashion.
