The hot girl summer narrative is one that we are all accustomed to, but alt-pop artist Rosie Darling is here to flip it. Welcoming you into the turbulent depths of sad girl summer, the artist reveals her track, “Fucked Up Summer”. Delivering a narrative on a love lost before the usually-joyous haze of the summer months, Darling gets candid on the all-too-relatable feeling of missing someone. With the 2022-favoured grunge-tinged angsty pop sensibilities littering the tune, it is safe to say that listeners will be sent spiralling into their feels upon first listen, the same feels induced by cuts such as Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Drivers Licence” and Billie Eilish‘s “Happier Than Ever”.
“I definitely write from real emotions,” Darling explains. “There are a lot of specific lyrics. The song reveals more and more as it goes on. It’s meant to be conversational and poetic. When you listen to one of my songs, I want you to feel like you’re going to see a movie. I met Halsey in Whole Foods, and I was super inspired by meeting her. She followed me on Instagram and said I could send her music. I was on such a high I wanted to lean into her style. It was a huge inspiration for ‘Fucked Up Summer’.”
With a moody music video accompanying the release in which the artist serenades watchers in a tortured manner underneath the blare of violet skies, the track’s tear-jerking essence is confirmed once more. So, if you planned on spending your weekend in your bedroom crying, we suggest you do it along to the sound of this track.
