COACHELLA 2022

Harry and Shania, a surprise appearance from Justin Bieber and Emo Nite’s nostalgia-filled set were among the many highlights of Coachella’s post-COVID comeback.

Coachella made its grand return to the desert this weekend, for the first time since 2019, bringing headliners Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia along for the ride. True to form, weekend one was filled with surprise guests, brand new songs and more parties than any one human could possibly attend (though we definitely tried…).

Here’s everything you missed at Coachella 2022 weekend one…

As the Friday headliner, Harry Styles debuted two new songs – “Boyfriend” and “Late Night Talking” – from his upcoming album Harry’s House, and treated us all to a little One Direction throwback with “What Makes You Beautiful”.

However, the moment that had everyone talking for three days straight was when the Gucci-clad showman welcomed Shania Twain to the stage and the two proceeded to duet on Shania’s classic singles, “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” and “You’re Still The One”. Life made.

Justin Bieber made a surprise appearance

Biebs got his “Peaches” out during collaborator Daniel Caesar’s Friday night set, sending the crowd into orbit as he appeared shirtless on the main stage to perform their four-time Grammy-nominated hit.

Emo Nite threw it back in the Sahara Tent

DJ duo Morgan Freed and T.J. Petracca turned it up for their Coachella debut, packing out the Sahara Tent on Saturday afternoon with a set full of nostalgic bangers. From My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade”, to “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, Emo Nite had all the bases covered and fans going absolutely wild. Clad in matching shirts reading “we aren’t supposed to be here”, Morgan and T.J. welcomed surprise guest Forrest Kline of Hellogoodbye to the stage to perform “Here (In Your Arms)”, while Plain White T’s front man Tom Higgenson also appeared to sing “Hey There Delilah”.

The parties were next level

Whether you were in possession of a Coachella wristband or not, Palm Springs and the surrounding desert was the place to be this weekend, with the events taking place around the main festival (unaffiliated and otherwise) attracting their own superstar talent and celebrity attendees.

Friday’s Gala Music x TAO Desert Nights event saw Black Coffee take to the decks, with Timothée Chalamet, Huddy and Chanel Iman among the guests. Over at NYLON House, Emma Chamberlain, Gavin Leatherwood and Sabrina Carpenter partied to the sweet sounds of Peggy Gou. LA nightlife stalwarts Framework, alongside partners including Wynn Nightlife, treated fans to three distinctive parties: Friday’s Club Called Rhonda with Purple Disco Machine, Saturday’s Desert Air with Peggy and the Martinez Brothers, and Las Vegas favourite Art of the Wild on Sunday.

There was no end to the daytime soirées, either, with Day Club Palm Springs bringing even more heat to the desert with DJ sets from Kim Petras and Caroline Polachek. Over at Ace Hotel, HBO Max hosted The Flight Attendant Preflight Lounge, where guests could indulge in massages, facials and plenty of zen. Post-relaxation, the next party was mere steps away, with the Desert Gold DJs manning the Ace pool all weekend long.

Euphoria star Chloe Cherry co-hosted the NTWRK x Galore party on Saturday, alongside Tyga, while over at ZOEasis – The Zoe Report’s annual event – guests included Ava Phillippe, Yellowjackets stars Ella Purnell and Sammi Hanratty, and Keke Palmer. Charli XCX also got in on the day party action, closing the Pandora Oasis with her performance on Sunday evening.

The Do Lab kept us dancing all weekend

Returning with all the water pistol antics and secret sets of Coachellas gone by, the Do Lab provided plenty of welcome dance breaks, with performances from Diplo, SG Lewis and a b2b set from Walker & Royce alongside VNSSA.

Crypto was key

Plenty of the parties and activations incorporated NFTs and cryptocurrency into their offerings, with the main festival offering attendees a free In Bloom NFT, which could be redeemed for limited edition merchandise as well as food and beverage.

Vault 721 hosted their own $ETHer Sunday event at Villa Royale, complete with an easter egg hunt where attendees could win Ethereum, NFTs, diamonds and private jet vouchers, among other luxurious treats. Meanwhile, over at Gala Music x TAO Desert Nights, those on the guest list received NFT tickets for entry.

Did we mention the food?

With its close proximity to LA’s bustling restaurant scene, it’s no surprise that the festival’s food vendors were next level. From Kravis-approved vegan fast food joint Monty’s Good Burger, to an Omakase Speakeasy from Chef Phillip Frankland Lee’s Sushi by Scratch, there was truly something for every palate. Shout out to the Lettuce Feast food truck for the best vegan fried chickn we’ve ever tasted.

Swedish House Mafia x The Weeknd proved a perfect combination to wrap up the weekend

Between The Weeknd replacing Ye on short notice and Swedish House Mafia’s big reunion performance, anticipation was high for the final set of weekend one. From the minute SHM’s silhouettes appeared on the big screens, the party was in full swing, with Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso alternating between fan favourites like “Don’t You Worry Child” and “Miami 2 Ibiza” and tracks from their brand new album, Paradise Again.

The Weeknd’s first appearance came with his track “Sacrifice”, which SHM remixed back in January, kicking off a 17-song set that included covers of Kanye West’s “Hurricane”, Future’s “Low Life” and Drake’s “Crew Love”. His own hits “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears” had the entire Polo Field singing along, while “Moth To A Flame” with SHM closed the festival on a high.
