There was only one way to start this week, and it is with the sweet sounds of Asher Knight. Dropping his second EP, “Still Standing”, listeners have been treated to an array of acoustic cuts and shimmering pop sensibilities today, culminating in a repeat worthy project. From “Alone” to “Burn” and “Survive” you are sure to be rendered enchanted by the talent’s bold tone and soul-baring lyricism upon first listen.

When discussing how this EP is different from the first, Asher explains, “I have grown hugely as a writer. These songs are more personal because I was more vulnerable, so my emotion is in my vocal more, and when I perform these songs, I can feel the passion I had when writing them.”

Upon the release of the EP, the artist sat down with Wonderland to discuss the song that inspired his career and how he has grown musically in between projects.

Hey Asher, how are you?
I’m good, thank you!

How has this past year been for you?
The past year has been great. I spent a lot of time writing and recording music and was able to go on tour and perform many of the new songs, which was amazing!

What was your favourite memory from 2021?
It must be going on tour with Rak-Su; I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to go on tour last year, but so thankful I was. It was just so much fun and laughter during the entire tour and that was amazing.

How did you first get into music?
Accidently, I was training to do dance or drama, but one day my teacher said I needed to sing in class, and I tried shying away from it but eventually did. “Can’t help falling in love” by Elvis Presley was the first song I ever sang, and in that moment, I fell in love with music.

What sparked the interest?
I always knew I wanted to perform, but in that moment at school, I just knew it had to be as a singer and nothing else.

Where are you from?
I’m originally from Bradford in West Yorkshire.

Did your hometown impact your sound?
Musically I don’t think it has, but vocally I’m sure it has because of my accent.

And now you’re about to drop your second EP, talk us through your mindset going into the project?
With this EP, I wanted to stretch myself so making sure the videos were like nothing I’ve ever done before, like Burning a structure down, being in the air and with my latest video having multiples of me on screen. Now I am aiming to focus on performing the EP while on tour and bringing across the emotions I felt while writing the songs.

And what single means the most to you on the project?
“Burn” as it talks about a hard time I went through in a friendship that I still often think about.

What do you hope people take away from the EP?
I hope people take away that love is complex and not always straightforward, but it’s something that we all deserve and something extremely powerful.

How would you describe your growth between the EPs?
I have grown hugely as a writer. These songs are more personal because I was more vulnerable, so my emotion is in my vocal more, and when I perform these songs, I can feel the passion I had when writing them.

Who inspires you?
Artists like Taylor Swift, James Arthur, Callum Scott because their music tells stories that people can connect with and feel a part of.

What are you most excited about?
Most excited about releasing new music and being able to share those new songs while on tour with “Here at Last”.
