Is there any better way to start off the day than flipping off the patriarchy? Artist, Dyan Valdés, doesn’t think there is. Dropping her new single, “Stand”, the songstress offers us a narrative, sure to have you feeling empowered.
Calling on her own harrowing experience of being attacked by a stranger in the streets of Berlin, Valdés decided to pen a poignant letter to women across the globe in which she ignites a revolution again patriarchal oppression, all of which is fuelled by undeniable defiance. With a chaotic beat, electronic sensibilities and the artist’s commanding tone coming together to create a sonic statement of sorts, all mixed in with the track’s core theme, the project situates itself as much of a call to arms as it does a tune.
“I arrived home, fortunately safely, and felt overwhelmed by my own experience, and by reports of increased domestic violence and the exploitation of female labour at the frontlines of the pandemic response,” shares Valdés when speaking on the experience that inspired the track.
