When thinking of the tracks that have defined the last decade, Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” instantly springs to mind. So, when it came time for the dynamic DJ trio, Meduza, to search for their next collaborator, the Irish talent was naturally the only person to turn to. And, the result? Prepare to dance the upcoming weekend away to the uplifting and party-ready rhythms of their new club cut, “Tell It To My Heart”.

When speaking on working with Hozier on the new track, the trio divulge, “Working with Hozier has been amazing, we never had a session personally as we were really busy in the US touring, and he lives in Ireland. He’s such a talented artist and a humble and nice guy, so it was pretty easy working together and finding a good balance on the song between our two styles.”

Upon the release of their club anthem, the collective took some time out of their schedule to chat to Wonderland about their appreciation of collaborator Hozier and the feelings they hope to invoke in their listeners with their latest track. Head below to enjoy our interview with Meduza…

Hey Meduza, how are you! How has 2021 been for you?
It has been a really good year, we went back on tour, and we spent a lot of time in the US playing in clubs and festivals – we missed that. Also, we finally released our new single with Hozier, so I would rate this year as good. We would also prefer to see a full European club circuit re-opening for 2022.

The pandemic affected a lot of people’s creativity, how did you navigate it?
To be honest, it didn’t affect us! Our creativity was really at a high level as we made “Paradise”, our last single with Dermot Kennedy, during the pandemic. We’ve also been working on a lot of new club-based tracks that we are going to release next year, the only hard thing was not having writing sessions in person with songwriters and artists. In the studio, you can create that feeling, and that magic you rarely get on a remote one.

How did you first get into music? What sparked the interest?
At home with our families, we all have an ex-DJ or ex-musician, we all grew up in musical environments, so it has been a kind of normal life process from father to son.

Do you think your hometown influenced you in any way?
Of course, all of the places that you visit, or the place where you live or used to live when you were younger, all the music you used to listen to since you were just a kid can influence your life and your music, music is coming from inside like your soul.

You first exploded onto the scene in 2019! What was this experience like? Did you feel pressure at all?
We can’t say it wasn’t a good experience; we are still living a dream. We’ve been fighting all our lives, through good and bad moments, or experiences in music. So, when you see your dreams becoming a reality, it can be nothing but the best experience of your life. Pressure is a part of the game – it helps you to focus and give more every time, trying to improve yourself in life and your music.

And now you’re back with your new single, “Tell It To My Heart”, talk us through the production process?
Working with Hozier has been amazing, we never had a session personally as we were really busy in the US touring, and he lives in Ireland. He’s such a talented artist and a humble and nice guy, so it was pretty easy working together and finding a good balance on the song between our two styles.

And you worked with Hozier for the single, what was this experience like?
As I said before, he’s so humble and talented – he is one of the kindest and greatest humans we have had the pleasure of working with in the music industry. We were big fans of his ever since he dropped his first single “Take Me To Church”, and the first time we met was a few months ago whilst shooting the performance video in Ireland, we had breakfast together, we spent like 2 hours talking and laughing like old friends.

What do you want people to take away from your music?
Emotion and an experience. A friend of ours said the following, and it’s completely correct – we want to make music that makes complete strangers hug each other on the dancefloor, a record that makes the whole room fall in love.

Who would you say inspires your music?
We listen to every genre of music every day. Of course, travelling the world inspires us a lot when we write. The writing process in the studio is just an expression of what you have inside. Inspiration can also come from the music you love and you just want to re-work, trying to give it something more personal to us.

What’s next for you? What are you most excited for?
Spending Christmas with family is our priority now, we’ve been far from home for almost one year now, so it’s time to have some time off with them. Then, we have a lot of shows coming in for 2022 in Europe, the USA, including our residency in Vegas at Wynn Encore for the second year, South America, Australia and many more, and then we have a lot of new music to release. We also have the new single and hopefully a lot of writing sessions across the globe – it’s an exciting time.
