When it comes to the innovative minds currently dominating the creative industry, no one is doing it quite like Heron Preston. Known for his boundary-breaking approach to designing and hype-worthy collaborations with the likes of Virgil Abloh, the creative has established himself as a maverick worthy of the name. And now, in a bid to ensure that his success only continues to swell, Heron Preston has looked to Calvin Klein to unveil Heron Preston for Calvin Klein: Season 2.

Standing as the creative consultant of the new collection, Heron has looked to his extensive knowledge of streetwear to unveil a line packed full of oversized garments and sleek autumn-ready cuts. And, with sustainably sourced materials also featuring, the collection boasts an important link to the conscious direction that fashion is taking.

When speaking on the ethos behind the line, Heron claimed, “I think that choosing sustainably focused designs has been innately tied to my approach. It’s the future of design, and if we want to keep making great things, we all have to do our part in keeping the impact of our work and how it affects the environment in mind. What was great is that Calvin Klein has already been thinking about this for years, so being able to integrate sustainable and functional elements into the collection was in total alignment with the brand and my personal design ethos.”

Hey Heron, how are you? How has this past year been for you?
I’m good, feeling very fortunate and blessed.

With everything that happened last year, has your creativity been affected?
I think that the streets of New York became a huge inspiration for me. Over the last few years, I was travelling internationally pretty heavily. So being in one location for so long has made me refocus on the streets of New York.

Fashion has seen huge changes these past 18 months! What has been the biggest change for you?
As it was for everyone, it has really been a challenge. I started this project for season 1, a few weeks right before the world shut down. So my team and the Calvin Klein team had to figure out how to establish working together in new ways. The experience ended up being really dynamic and collaborative.

How did you first get involved with Calvin Klein? What inspired you for this new collection?
It was the black and white ads with Marky Mark and Kate Moss that I remember as the first mark Calvin Klein had on my mind. Buying the briefs when I started phasing out of boxer shorts, was like a coming of age. I felt cool.

The collection features sustainably sourced materials, what does this mean to you and how important is it to be sustainable in fashion?
I think that choosing sustainably focused designs has been innately tied to my approach. It’s the future of design, and if we want to keep making great things, we all have to do our part in keeping the impact of our work and how it affects the environment in mind. What was great is that Calvin Klein has already been thinking about this for years, so being able to integrate sustainable and functional elements into the collection was in total alignment with the brand and my personal design ethos.

Each piece is versatile and unique, which one is your favourite?
It’s hard, but I think I have a few favourites, including the nylon puffer jacket – it’s the most essential jacket of the season in my opinion and feels most season-appropriate since it’s getting colder in NYC now. Also, the Denim carpenter jeans – we did so many fittings for these to get the fit just right, and the fabrication is incredible.

What do you want people to take away from the collection?
I want people to feel comfortable throughout their day and feel like they can live in it!

What are you most excited for? What is next for you?
Currently hoping that the world continues to be safe and opening up as best it can. Working on my own Fall22 line right now which is going to be fire.
