NEW NOISE: MAC WETHA

The artist discusses his new track “IDONTBELIEVEIT!!” upon the release of its accompanying music video.

Tapping into this year’s obsession with all things punk is artist Mac Wetha with his upbeat cut “IDONTBELIEVEIT!!”. Featuring the artist’s attitude-filled and grungey vocals laying over electric production, culminating in infectious synth-heavy sounds. And, while the track masterfully pays tribute to the 2021 sound trends, that is not where the wonders of the project cease. Also dropping a BTS music video featuring the scenes of Mac’s whirlwind journey whilst opening for Beabadoobee’s tour, the song becomes all the more intoxicating.

When speaking on the track’s music video, the artist claimed, “the visuals mean a lot to me as they were all shot on tour with the legend Beabadoobee. So this transformed the meaning of the name of the song, the whole experience was like a childhood dream come true – I almost couldn’t BELIEVEIT!!. The video was filmed and edited by my partner and best friend Daniela; all of our touring crew are close friends, so it’s all very wholesome.”

Upon the release of track “IDONTBELIEVEIT!!”, the artist sat down with Wonderland to talk about how his latest track came to be and where his love of music stems from. Head below to enjoy our interview with Mac Wetha…

Hi Mac, how are you!
Hello! I am very well, thank you.

How has the last year been for you? Do you think the pandemic has affected you sonically?
Not really sonically so much as it gave me an opportunity and a push to focus more on making my solo stuff, figuring out what I want to make and what I want to write about.

Let’s start at the beginning! When did you realise your passion for music?
Playing games like Singstar and Guitar Hero as a kid! I’ve also always loved performing, I lived in Spain as a kid in a small town called Medina Sidonia, and in one of the next towns over there was a little drama club which I used to be a part of, that is where I realised then that I loved being on stage. From then, I would often daydream about performing music and singing. That’s when I also started playing the guitar and listening to as much music as I could, this was around the same time that I got access to the internet when I was around 11, so I spent a lot of time on YouTube discovering music.

Do you have anyone in particular that you cite as an inspiration to you musically?
My parents inspired me a lot, and they showed me lots of great music as a child. Chris Cornell and Frank Carter were also big inspirations as frontmen. In terms of the actual sound of what I’m making, it would take too long to be specific!

Talk us through your new track “IDONTBELIEVEIT!!”.
“IDONTBELIEVEIT!!” was written by my buddy Ben and I. It’s us calling back to the emo and pop-punk stuff we grew up on, but with my style of production. Lyrically, it’s about imagining where you would be in life, or what would happen if you took certain paths or decisions in relationships that you didn’t end up taking.

And, it also comes accompanied by an intimate BTS music video! Talk us through the visuals and what they mean to you!
The visuals mean a lot to me as they were all shot on tour with the legend Beabadoobee. So this transformed the meaning of the name of the song, the whole experience was like a childhood dream come true – I almost couldn’t BELIEVEIT!!. The video was filmed and edited by my partner and best friend Daniela; all of our touring crew are close friends, so it’s all very wholesome.

You also have a sold-out heading show in London coming up! How are you feeling about that?
I’m psyched, man. It’s going to be crazy, I can’t wait for more.

Do you have something you particularly enjoyed about performing live?
I still get very nervous before shows, so the feeling of focus and that relief of anxiety after the first couple of songs is amazing. That, and just seeing people enjoy the music I’ve written will never get old, it makes me so happy.

If you could collaborate with one other artist in the world, who would it be?
Smiley.

Aside from the show, what is next for you? Is there anything you are keen to start working on?
I am just excited to be working on new stuff and producing for friends, as always.
