Indie-rock collective Glossy Clouds is exploding onto the scene with their self-titled debut project. Branding their sound as “glitter rock”, the Lyon-based duo and their backing vocalists serve up infectious tracks that seamlessly combine the hyper-colourful tones of buoyant pop with the captivating energy of classic rock. With chaotic tracks such as “Buy All That You Want” at the projects helm, the band’s uniquely crafted place in the industry has become solidified, making them ones to watch.

When speaking on their latest project, the band went on to state, “We are very proud to be able to give the first glimpse of our project with this EP which represents us so well! Each title is in a way a facet of Glossy Clouds, with our ambitions, rants, dreams and emotions. It’s a unique and indescribable feeling when songs we know so well, have played and rehearsed so many times and worked on in the recording studio finally fall on the audience’s ears as a new sound! It’s extremely exciting and incredibly stimulating to create again!”

Upon the release of their electric EP, the rising collective sat down with Wonderland for a discussion on how they came together, the pressures of dropping a debut project and their plans for the future. Head below to read our interview with Glossy Clouds…

Hey guys, how has this past year been for you? What have you been up to?
Hey Wonderland! This year has been pretty surprising! We stopped our respective jobs to devote ourselves fully to the project, to work and compose tirelessly. The start of the year was hardly favourable to these ambitions, with limited travel, stopping of musical events, the closing of rehearsal rooms. It was, however, at the beginning of the year that we signed with our UK label KWS Blank Canvas. This year marks a huge turning point in the life of the band!

With everything that happened last year, was your creativity affected?
Since the creation of the project, we have been adept at the precept of “living things, whatever they are, in order to be able to create in a relevant way.”
The global situation last year held back a lot for so many, but our creativity has survived! In the end, it is very inspiring to experience such an exceptional situation!

How did you guys first meet and what sparked the musical interest?
It was Cécilia, one of our 3 choristers and Jérôme’s partner who introduced us more than 10 years ago. There was a Muse song playing on the hi-fi system, and this is how the meeting between two music lovers took place. A long and fascinating evening followed, talking about music, cinema, art, all accompanied by a few peaty whiskeys and lots of cigarettes! There have been hundreds of evenings like that ever since! While our respective friends went clubbing, we preferred to listen to Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd and talk about the infinity of the universe!

You’re from Lyon, do you think your area inspired your sound in any way?
The Lyon scene is very electronic, a music style that we appreciate, but, we don’t think we are influenced in any way by this geographical location and its musical imprint. We are probably more influenced by our father’s vinyls!

And now you’ve just released your debut EP! Talk us through your mindset approaching the project?
We are very proud to be able to give the first glimpse of our project with this EP which represents us so well!
It’s extremely exciting and incredibly stimulating to create again!

With this being your debut project, did you feel a pressure to live up to expectations?
Being music lovers, we see that not everything can please everyone, but we see this as a good thing. There is inevitably a little voice in our heads that wonders if the tracks will please, making sure we are not missing the point. But, we also note that if the music is created with sincerity, desire and passion, it has its place. We are in our early days in which we are constantly evolving and we have so much to learn, but we have a deep respect for everything we create and look forward to sharing these creations every time!

Looking back on the project, which song stands out to you and why?
It’s a difficult question! Maybe “Buy All That You Want”, which in a way marked an evolution in the sound of Glossy Clouds. Until then, we had formed a much more incisive garage rock duo!

What do you want people to take away from your music?
We like to create an atmosphere for each of our songs, to bring them a colour, an inspiration, a very marked atmosphere or, on the contrary, a more elusive one. As a result, we present varied music which goes from glam-pop to powerful rock through funk, soul or acoustic ballads. We would be so happy to be known for this eclecticism, for the sound trip that we are trying to create.

Who are your inspirations?
There are multiple, and not all are musical. We love cinema: science fiction, author films, social dramas, adventure. We are huge fans of Quentin Tarantino’s cinema and his very strong visual atmospheres as well as his hilarious dialogues! Cinema plays a direct role in our creative process. It is not uncommon for a film scene, dialogue or visual aesthetic to inspire a track or a music video. The visual ambience of the band is really important.
When it comes to music, the list goes on. Arctic Monkeys, Queens Of The Stone Age, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, Portishead, St Vincent, Muse, Tame Impala, The Kill. So many bands have etched our personality, and are now omnipresent in our personal and creative daily lives.

What’s next for you? What are you most excited for?
We have just finished a second studio session for the recording of our first album, which will be released in March 2022. This is an album that promises to be a real journey through all that we love and want to offer! We will also be playing our first concert at 229 London on Tuesday 14th September. It feels like a dream that we are going to play on the stage of a country whose music has been such an inspiration to us. We really want to go as far as possible.
We take this opportunity to warmly thank our label KWS and our manager, Tim, for giving us this incredible chance to make Glossy Clouds shine even more!
