Gently easing us into the weekend with his electro-pop-tinged single is newcomer Douglas McGuire with “Island”. Effortlessly weaving in between layers of somber synths and uplifting chord progressions, the artist puts his vocal ability and lyricism at the forefront of his latest single, drawing us in on various tonal shifts. Capturing that late summer night vibe perfectly, the Croydon-born artist creates a dreamy soundscape on the single, using various electronic elements that lead you into a sweet ecstasy.
“This song is the final in a trilogy of songs about a girl I only dated for a couple of weeks, but who had a very profound impact on me and my life,” the artist revealed. “The lyrics carry strong nautical themes, which collectively come to represent the ups and downs of the relationship I once had, and where I am right now in life as well as with respect to the relationship I had with this girl.”
Starting his career at just 12 years old, the multi-talented singer-songwriter has gone on to work with Grammy award-winning engineer and Kanye West favourite James Auwarter. With the rising star due to release more music in the coming months, we can only imagine how big the rest of 2021 will be for the star.
