With the sun sailing high in the sky and the AC on full blast, we can happily say summer is here. But it wouldn’t be the same if north London rapper GBNGA didn’t return with yet another blissful anthem. From his twinkling R&B-laced single “Cherry B” with Gxnxsis to his funky house-ready single “Sleep”, the artist knows how to bring the vibes for summer, and his latest single “Around Me” is no different.
In a time where calls are being made for better representation of Black communities, GBNGA proudly celebrates his culture and area on his latest single, depicting black people in their most honest form – natural hair, good vibes, and all. Bringing together people from all walks of life, the artist strips everything back for his accompanying video, while he dives deep into various textures of old-school funky house and contemporary R&B. There’s always been a cinematic flair to GBNGA music, as he perfectly and intricately creates his own masterpieces using levels of unrestrained garage and breezy melodic piano keys.
The artist’s carefree attitude bursts at the seams of the single, as he commemorates and honours those who have stuck by him whatever the circumstance. Teaming up with South London singer-songwriter Ray Vela for the euphonic hook, the duo complements each other as she fades beneath the production during the breaks, and arises for those sultry ad-libs.
Opening up on his latest single, GBNGA revealed, “I’ve been in a weird place lately, I took some time to work on myself mentally, spiritually, and physically. I lost my Grandad and Uncle within the same month. I remember booking a studio session and pouring my heart out on any beat I heard…that’s how ‘Around Me’ came to be.”
Not conforming to the mainstream UK rap scene, GBNGA is comfortably sitting in his own lane and we’re not mad about it.
