Taken from her critically-acclaimed debut album, if i could make it go quiet, girl in red’s latest single is a furiously melancholic take on trauma. “It’s about you realizing you’re only a person, and the outer world can easily affect your body, even though you don’t feel like it’s affecting your mind,” she says. Your body is a temple after all, and your mind is something else entirely. Both are to be protected at all costs, so heed red’s warning of anyone trying to mess with your guard.
Our favourite rap girls are running this week’s music playlist.
girl in red – “body & mind”
Tommy Genesis – “Peppermint”
SHE’S BACK! The sultry, soft-spoken rapper leaves no fingerprints on her brand new single “Peppermint”. With a thoroughly addictive beat, her signature stripped-back drawl and a self-directed music video, Genesis turns the dessert into her own club, getting down and dirty atop flashy sports cars as she reminds us exactly why she’s that girl.
Scott Vlassis – “Golden”
Pull up to our bumper baby! Or at least to the neon-lit petrol station Scott Vlassis that provides the backdrop for his latest video. The subdued pop tune is a shimmery ode to house, fitted with heavenly vocals and driving rhythms. Not only is it instantly catchy and positively radiating with feel-good charm, but there’s also even a sexy dance break that we can learn for a TikTok video… now that’s golden!
frogi – “Phantom Limb”
Weaving between light and dark, frogi’s latest single is like a spaced-out nursery rhyme, a tune that, at least for three minutes and 37 seconds, solves all our problems, and makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The rising singer-songwriter penned the track to an old self, one who was down on their confidence and self-worth, to show her that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You might not see it yet, but frogi can assure you it’s brighter than an overhead light at the dentist.
Latto – “The Biggest”
Latto’s latest single is all about the journey. Having built her career from the ground up, this year the Atlanta-based rapper is kicking it into overdrive, with a brand new moniker and a couple of punch-packing singles to get us turned all the way up. With “The Biggest”, the rapper lets us all know who’s running her city, who’s racking up plaques left right and centre, and just how the next phase of her career is gonna pan out. That’s pretty bloody well if you couldn’t already guess…
Master KG – “Shine Your Light (feat. David Guetta and Akon)”
Hot off the heels of his TikTok viral tune “Jerusalema”, Master KG is back with a fresh new tune, joined by chart-toppers David Guetta and Akon. Wanting to bestow upon the world a fresh and exciting look at the future of dance, the trio have concocted a mix of dancefloor-ready Afro-house rhythms and uplifting lyrical offerings encouraging us to live our best lives. Leave the neggy vibes at the door and soak up all of this sonic splendour.
