When artists draw inspiration from their roots, they produce some of their most renowned works. This is most definitely the case for singer Rushil and his new single “Hold This”. While the emotive lyrics emulate the feelings of longing and love, the artist’s vocals are soul-piercing and captivating those who hear them. And, with the song also boasting a feature from its co-writer Abi Sampa, the track is a true display of musical mastery.

What sets this track apart from any other is its ode to Rushil’s Indian heritage. Infused with the enchanting sounds of traditional background singers amongst the sound of violins and the piano, we see the singer’s roots shine through. And, with the presence of classic Indian instrumentation ringing throughout, the track embodies the art of musical fusion.

This dazzling crossover does not come as a surprise, however. Having come across Indian Classical Music during his time at the University of Oxford, the songwriter embarked on a journey of musical exploration, which has seen him embrace the styles of work produced by his idols, which include Bon Iver and Damien Rice, along with the sounds that are synonymous with his heritage. With the artist’s latest track out for release today, 2021 holds the promise of more soul-baring songs infused with the singer’s heritage.
