Strap in tight, because Kim Jones is taking us up in his rocket ship for Dior’s AW21 menswear showcase.
After the year we’ve had, Dior have had the right idea with their otherworldly AW21 menswear collection. Taking us through the cosmos into a new odyssey, Kim Jones gave us an explosion of colour and nostalgia against a backdrop of intergalactic space travel. Bursting with energy, the collection boasts joyfulness and optimism, with trippy silk shirts inspired by comic books, and jazzy matching satin suits that look perfect for lockdown chill sessions.
Soundtracked by 80s retro icons Deee-Lite and mixed by Honey Dijon, the show took hold of New York’s art scene in the early 90s with Lady Miss Kier purring “How do you say, Dioooor” – opening the doors to a time machine and transforming the blacked-out room into a mirage of pink dusty stars and faraway galaxies. Attended by the likes of Kim Kardashian West, Fai Khadra and Robert Pattinson, the show got off to a roaring start, and quickly our worries of the present-day were lost in space.
Collaborating with downtown street artist Kenny Scharf, the AW21 collection marries pop culture with a neon palette, embodying both philosophies of modern art and escapism. Designing a series of prints and tailoring, the collection boasts Chinese seed-stitch embroidery combined with contrasting fringes and metallic threads.
The collection has something for everyone, whether your meticulously planning your post-lockdown fit or keeping cosy in the meantime with lush fuzzy monogram slippers, it was created with every occasion in mind, staying in tone with the times. Toying with artful tailoring, Jones displayed his innovation with loose hitched-up trouser legs and styling them with monogrammed hiking boots.
As we have spent the past year in a state of constant uncertainty, Jones provided us with an escape in this collection, as he looks to the future beyond the present. If the future is anything that Jones has imagined then we are 100% involved.
