For fans of King Princess and Daughter, a distinct new voice is coming out of the ether. Here to slam gaslighting and the relationship issues that plague us all in 2020 is Marlo the Barbarian with simmering new track “Fake Yourself”.

Ever dated someone with a superiority complex? Someone who made you doubt yourself, or forced you to apologise for your past? The razor-sharp rising star chronicles the pitfalls of toxic behaviour and how they can mess with our psyches. Not on her watch. Slick vocals roll over undulating basslines and a glossy pop production, telling the story of eventual empowerment. Yes, we are here for this energy.

And the music video is a lush candy-hued tapestry showcasing Marlo in various personas and characters – encouraging listeners to make their own minds up about their self-worth and identity.

“The ‘Fake Yourself’ video is all about different phases of gaslighting in a relationship: overflow, emptiness and excess, faking it, fear, and insanity,” explains the artist. “Each set-up is supposed to feel, “fake,” and slightly unsettling. Nothing is real and everything is real.”
