Show us a more tenacious talent than obylx… you can’t. The Bristol-based producer has just announced the release of his third full-length album in 3 years – since his debut in 2018 with the mega 21-track effort that is Once – while we’re still tucked up in bed working from home.
Out on the 1st of December, via obylx’s own Guise Records imprint, Out of The Woods’ final single of this year – “Alright” – is out tomorrow too, marking 3 years to the date of the musical polymath releasing a new song on the first day of every month, like an unrelenting New Year’s resolution. The song maintains a cautious optimism, harking back to obylx’s humble beginnings without budgets, plans or drop schedules, “Alright” shows not only how far he’s come since the beginning of his music career, in producing and songwriting, but also his determination to carry on through whatever personal struggles life throws his way.
These themes run throughout the entire project, with obylx grappling with the death of his father whilst also exploring the other important relationships in his life, not to mention solitude, conflict, and of course, the good times too. “I feel like it has been a year that has concluded my wandering and has led me out of my metaphorical forest,” he explains. “I have learned how to deal with grief and turn it into a driving force. At the start of the project I deliberately left space so that I could grow into it. I have reached that place and now ready to “Walk On” into next year.”
The result is a totally coherent full-length release, somewhat left-of-field from the world of pop yet also effortlessly inspired by it, from Bowie and MGMT to Radiohead and Flume. Through a mixture of rich sounds and emotional landscapes, it seems obylx has not only found an escape through the medium of music, but also a space to help him heal.
