Award season is among us – but we’re not talking about the Grammy’s, we’re talking about Dior! The French fashion house has just announced Pamela Tulizo as the winner of this year’s Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award. Alongside a €10,000 cash prize, the award also carries a creative commission from the house of Dior itself.
The Congolese photographer, now based in Johannesburg, made waves with her photo series “Double Identity”, which explores conflicts in the identity of African women through 13 stunning self-portraits. Tulizo’s award-winning images are harsh yet colourful; depicting mothers; labourers, and camera-ready businesswomen transposed against stark landscapes in an exploration of gender and femininity.

“[Tulizo] demonstrates powerful representation, remarkable acuteness and genuine evocative strength which captured the entire jury,” Dior said of the decision, which saw Tulizo beat out the likes of digital artist Hanwei Li and collage artist Prune Phi.
The jury for Dior’s Young Talent award consists of Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen and legendary supermodel and photographer Helena Christensen, in addition to immersive visual artist Rachel Rose; founder of Luma Arles Maja Hoffmann; Emma Lavigne, director of the Palais de Tokyo; Jérôme Pulis, international communications director of Christian Dior Parfums; and Simon Baker, director of the Maison Européene de la Photographie in Paris.
