At every celebration or happy moment in our lives, one thing is consistent: cake. Always the centre of attention at birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, cake represents more than just fluffy layers of sugar — it’s moments of joy. Chasing that sugar high, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, is bottling that feeling with their limited edition whisky: Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake.

Wrapped in a colourful bottle, what lies within is a rich, copper-coloured whisky. With a complex flavour palette that includes notes of honey, white chocolate and fruit, the taste is honeyed yet tangy, like a delicious treat from the bakery.

Naturally, the brand has teamed up with modern-day Willy Wonka and legendary pastry chef Dominique Ansel to create a ‘CakeTail’ — a cake and cocktail pairing — to make the drink even more special. Imaginative and whimsical, Ansel dreamt up an innovative new take on a pineapple boat cake, while expert mixologist Jeremy Le Blanche has created a succulent Old Fashioned pineapple cocktail.

If pineapple doesn’t float your boat, there are three more ‘CakeTail’ concoctions inspired by Glenmorangie’s best- loved whiskies — The Original, The Lasanta and The Quinta Ruban — with easy-to-follow recipes on Glenmorangie’s social channels for an at-home treat.

“Like so many of us, some of my favourite memories come from cake, whether it be helping my granny in her kitchen, or the pineapple birthday cake my daughter surprised me with one year,” Dr Bill explains. “By finishing whisky in Tokaji wine casks, I’ve captured the joy of those indulgent cake moments in Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake. The liquid is a rich copper, but the taste is pure technicolour, luscious, sweet and complex with multi-layered bursts of honey, white chocolate and fruits with a hint of mint. As you might expect, it tastes incredible when enjoyed with actual cake, so it’s fantastic to see Dominique bring it to life in his CakeTails.”

“When I first tried Glenmorangie, it opened my senses to this amazing world of colour, texture, taste, and aroma — it’s a new adventure each time,” Dominique adds. “I never guessed I could enjoy whisky this much, but there is a friendliness to the way Glenmorangie tastes. Baking and whisky making are different worlds but they have a lot in common. If you stir Dr Bill’s passion for single malt with my love for cake, you get the best of both our worlds!”

Life is meant to be celebrated! Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake is available from 22 September 2020.
