Project Geländewagen is something of an industry first. The initiative, announced today, has paired the classic German carmakers Mercedes-Benz with Off-White and very own Virgil Abloh. Abloh’s task was simple: create a unique artwork from the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which celebrated it’s 40th birthday last year.

Motivated by a desire to help support the arts internationally during a time of such turmoil and precarity, Abloh worked collaboratively with Gorden Wagener, the chief design officer at Mercedes-Benz for the occasion. This one-of-a-kind partnership cross-pollinates fashion and art with the luxury automotive industry, offering a “Get in loser, we’re going shopping” olive branch in the name of charity.

How might they do this you ask? Well, in co-operation with an established auction house, a home-scale replica of the Abloh and Wagener helmed artwork will be auctioned off after the project has been launched, hoping to inspire creative collaboration to a wide-spanning global audience whilst giving back to those same communities through the auction’s proceeds.

The winner of the model auction will also receive exclusive access to the co-creators, including an intimate introduction to the powerhouse designers and an in-depth look at the inspirations behind the piece, making that final bid all the more special. They say good things come to those who wait, so Project Geländewagen’s digital launch date on September 8th is sure to be one to keep your eyes peeled for. Set your alarms now, everyone.
