Swedish-born star Robin Lundback, who goes by the moniker Boy In Space, is making waves worldwide with his addictively emotive songs that’ll leave you reaching for the tissues and dabbing at your eyes. His tracks are hard-hitting, emotional and authentic pop bangers that are full of teenage angst and the sting of heartbreak and betrayal.

Despite his sad subject matter however, Lundback assures us that he’s a pretty happy guy really, and that Boy In Space has become his way of coping with the harder things in life, as he hopes his music is for his listeners. In the future, he’s looking to stray from his Scandinavian pop roots and channel his creative energies into making songs with more of a country sound.

We caught up with him about his latest single with SHY Martin, “On A Prayer”, the meaning behind the moniker, and his plans for the future…

What’s the meaning behind your stage name, Boy In Space?
I’m a spacey person… if you meet me for the first time, I probably seem like I’m crazy and all over the place. But also… “Space” stands for this state of existence in my head where I spend a lot of time expressing my most intense emotions. They can be sad, super creative, or 99% of the time they are just super weird.

You’re set to play two shows soon in London and then in America for the first time soon after. Do you ever get nervous about performing?
I do get nervous! But it’s a good kinda nervous and when I step on stage it turns into a lot of excitement. I can’t wait to perform with Alec Benjamin, and I know I will be back in 2020 with my own shows in London.

The lyrics for your new track “On A Prayer” are very raw and honest. What are you singing about in the song?
Thank you. “On A Prayer” is about a relationship that recently ended… and that dark feeling where everything around you reminds you of the person that you miss a lot.

How would you say your upbringing inspired your music?
Everyone in my family is very musical… my mom, my brothers, music has always been apart of my life from a really young age. My upbringing inspired me in that they’ve always encouraged me to pursue what I love.

What sort of music did you grow up listening to?
I grew up listening to everything. My mom leaned towards pop and dad was more into what is now “classic rock.” The songs that stuck with me were always the ones with big choruses… “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper, “Take On Me” by a-ha,” anything Phil Collins.. you get it. I think that’s why I like a lot of Post Malone’s hooks and choruses today.

What do you want people to get from your new track?
I definitely wanted the lyrics to make people feel a certain type of way, but I wanted to bundle it up into a very upbeat pop song so maybe it wouldn’t be so hard for people to listen to.

You merge pop and country elements in the song. Are you a fan of the country ‘revival’ that we’re seeing at the moment?
I usually don’t listen to country a lot but my older brother does so I think that has influenced me in some way. And yes I think it’s awesome!

How did you know you wanted SHY Martin to feature?
From the the first day we wrote the song, we knew it needed to be a duet. I’ve been a fan of SHY Martin’s songwriting and artistry for a while… so for me it was obvious! Yay Sweden.

How would you describe your genre?
It’s definitely grounded in Scandinavian pop but has a good mix of urban elements and some indie rock vibes. By my third album though I will probably be 100% country.

If today was your last day on earth, what would you do and where would you go?
I would eat fried chicken somewhere that has an amazing view with people that I love.

What’s your 5-year goal when it comes to music?
I would need to consult my board of directors first, but I think if I had to sum up the next few years… I would hope that I’m getting to do play my music for a lot more people around the world. I want to put out an EP next year and an album very soon. Playing Glastonbury would be a dream!
