Police brutality, racism, Black Lives Matter. The provocative debut from first-time director Reinaldo Marcus Green has never felt more timely, with Monsters and Men following the widespread tension in a neighbourhood in the aftermath of a police shooting.

Influenced by the horrifying case of Eric Garner who died resisting arrest back in 2014, while telling the officer “I can’t breathe” (with the whole incident being caught on a bystander’s phone), the film stars John David Washington (aka Denzel Washington’s son and star of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman) as a police officer caught up in the tragedy. With stunning cinematography and a compelling cast, we’re talking real powerful stuff.
