For years Weslee’s identity has been shrouded in mystery, but now they’re finally stepping into the spotlight. Having met in New York, Josh and Emma (surnames are still a secret for now) began crafting synth-pop bops and have been steadily growing a name for themselves.

Now with live shows coming up – get October 18th in your diary, kids – we caught up with the duo to find out all about them. Or at least try…

Going back to the beginning, how did you guys first meet?

We first met in New York, writing with and for other artists.

Why did you decide to start making music together?

We never, like, sat down with a plan to be artists or anything like that, it sort of happened as an accident. We cancelled a session one day and wrote “Gassed”. Neither one of us thought it was a song to pitch but we both really liked it. Two years later it ended up finding it’s way into an American television show, which I guess is what kick started the entire thing.

In what ways do you compliment each other as a duo?

Emma is really good at making me check myself.

How did the name Weslee come about?

It was the name of Emma’s pet turtle when she was a child, joking around one day we were like if we were in a band what would it be called (for a little context we had loads of different nicknames for different things).

Why did you choose to make it an anonymous project at first?

We just wanted to put out some songs and have it be about the music and not about us so making it anonymous was an easy way to do that.

What made you want to change that?

When we were asked to play a show we didn’t really have a choice.

Having both been songwriters for other people, how is different writing for yourselves?

When you write with other artists they usually have an identity and idea of what they want to do and we are here to help them get that point across. When it’s for us we sort of just vibe on what is going on in our lives and then try and turn that into something, it all comes from a real place or real thing that is happening at that particular moment.

What do you like to write about?

Real life.

So your recent EP “9F” is self-written, recorded and produced, as well as independently released, how come you chose to do it all yourselves?

We just wanted to put out music and it’s really easy to do that now with all the streaming stuff. We work with other people and have input from other people all the time so this was just us doing our own thing and it just made sense to do it all ourselves.

What’s the reception been like so far?

We think it’s been good!

How would you describe its sound?

It sounds like us.

How was your debut live show at Annie Mac’s AMP showcase?

There was a lot of anxiety but it was a lot fun and an amazing way to play our first show.

What’s next for Weslee?

We are currently working on our next EP, Emma has just finished making the next two videos which will come out this fall and then figuring out more lives shows.
