GUCCI SS19

Dolly Parton, white cockatoos and leather jockstraps came to Paris.

We’ve gotten used to expecting a certain level of gaudy now when it comes to Alessandro Michele’s Gucci. And the creative director did not disappoint when Gucci’s SS19 gang of oddballs headed from their usual home in Milan to the grand Théâtre Le Palace in Paris.

The usual eclectic offering was there: twee retro knits, embellished granny-chic loafers and gorgeous stretches of 70s suiting. But also unexpected flourishes: tributes to musical greats such as Janis Joplin and Dolly Parton with faces emblazoned on tracksuits and cowgirl looks (strawberry print trousers, yes please).

And sex was also very much on the agenda, with male models fearlessly geared up in 80s plunge bodysuits and leather studded jockstraps. Eyes marvelled at metallic tassel tiered trousers that illuminated the room with every movement, as well as one turquoise fringe showstopper.

Oh, and in true Gucci style, props were a talking point. Past seasons have seen baby dragons and model replica heads. This time? One casually perched white cockatoo. Bravo.
