Morgan Saint does not stick to a conventional path. The Long Island native began her musical journey taking piano classes in the second grade, but, she tells me, “I was really bad at actual piano”. This in turn allowed her to try her own stuff out. “I liked making things up more than I liked learning things that were already made,” she says, loosely referencing the creative instinct that has allowed her to fashion up a truly astounding debut EP – “17 HERO”, released late last week.

Finding her sound, she says, “was a really quick discovery process but once I found it, we like, ran with that. It feels very me.” This commitment to artistic authenticity is clear through her heavy involvement in all facets of the music – she designed the EP artwork and comes up with the concepts for her music videos too.

A talented creative in many fields (she went to Parsons to study photography and illustration and regularly writes poetry), she tells me, “I would love to do everything myself. If I could film my own videos I would. Just because I feel like that’s how you get the most pure, authentic like product.”

She has previously described her music as “moody pop” – an oxymoron of a genre that encapsulates what is so unique about Saint: her songs are upbeat with an edge, they are unlike the saccharine songs you usually find sitting under the pop label. Listening to first single “You” for example, the catchy hook runs around your head for days, but it’s her pure, slightly melancholy vocals alongside the production that really lend it a beautiful and haunting quality.

Discussing future plans she explains that she’s working towards a full record but is “going to see how everything unfolds”. If “17 HERO” is anything to go by, I’m sure she is going to go a long, long way.
