NYFW: RALPH LAUREN AW17

The designer marks fashion week with a lavish show in his garage.

Start The Engines

Like Riri’s motor-themed Fenty x Puma show earlier in the week, for AW17 Ralph Lauren served up a similarly car heavy display on Tuesday night. Set against the opulent backdrop of Mr Lauren’s most precious toys, the show invited guests into a world driven by the designer’s passion for automobiles. In a split-level garage in Bedford Hills (40 miles from New York, geography fans), models strode down the runway surrounded by a multimillion-dollar collection of rare Ferrari’s, MacLaren’s, Bugatti’s and more.

Pals In High Places

With some 300 guests chauffeur-driven upstate in black SUVs – blasting a jazz playlist specially concocted by Lauren himself – attendees included Jessica Chastain (face of the brand’s WOMAN fragrance) and Katie Holmes, who, stepping out in a pair of gold wide leg bottoms, made us green with envy. On the catwalk, Bella Hadid and Kendal Jenner turned heads in floor-sweeping gowns of bright red and ferrari yellow, respectively. 16 year-old Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s daughter, was the newbie working it.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Tweed!

Oh and the clothes! This collection saw classic grey tweed and impeccably-tailored suits interspersed with slinky gowns and tulle. Featuring both men’s and women’s looks – for the first time – Ralph Lauren mixed sport with refined tailoring. After a parade of preppy eye candy boasting three-piece suits and trenches, things turned racy with pops of red, yellow and blue, adding a playful look to the house’s bold vision of femininity. At the end of the show, Lauren emerged in his own racing zippered overalls, proving once more that, at 77, he is still behind the wheel.
