VANESSA GOUNDEN: ENDANGERED COLLECTION

Fashion collides with an environmental conscience for AW17.

Never simply about trends, Vanessa Gounden’s AW17 collection is a love letter to the world’s most stunning yet vulnerable species. Employing the label’s trademark 3D prints, the Endangered Collection is a strikingly elegant warning against the rising destruction of the planet that employs a kaleidoscope of rare and exquisite florals and animals, highlighting the threat of deforestation. “It’s something people aren’t really talking about,” says Gounden, the brand’s South African born founder and Creative Director. “The Ghost Orchid – no-one knows about it. Bringing these species to the fore is a great opportunity,” she continues.

Alongside the hauntingly gorgeous Ghost Orchid, other icons include the Silverback Gorilla and African Daisy, set here against ethereal aquamarine, rich pinks and dramatic blacks; fluid and luxurious silks, delicate crepes and sumo satins likewise navigate the silhouette of both Ready-to-Wear and signature couture pieces.

Since the brand’s star-studded launch back in 2011 – Poppy Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Jade Jagger all attended – Artivism, (the combining of social, environmental and political concerns with art) has been one of the brand’s central tenets. Gounden explains, “I want to grow into a bespoke, niche brand with a global footprint. Also, extending the life of each concept – making them talking points beyond just one season.” Powerfully accentuating the female form, this layest range then is designed for the informed and confident woman to wear as an embodiment of the urgency for change – très punk, if you ask us.
