New Noise: Sipprell
The South London singer talks us through her newest single.
What music did you listen to growing up?
I listened to a lot of R&B and soul. Mariah, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Brandy really inspired me vocally. My brothers played a lot of indie and rock music growing up so I heard a lot of Radiohead, Jimmy Hendrix and the Beatles.
Have you always wanted to be a singer?
Yeah. My mum was a singer so she had me singing along with her from a very young age. From around age 6 I knew that I wanted to be a singer when I grew up.
Describe your sound in three words…
Mellow, emotive, miscellaneous.
“From around age 6 I knew that I wanted to be a singer when I grew up.”
You’ve recently released your new song “Trust Issues”. What was the inspiration behind this song?
I wrote it about a time when an amazing person had come into my life but I’d had so much dark experience with love, the transition was scary and it took me a while to open up and believe it wasn’t too good to be true.
Has your sound changed since 2015’s “Letter D” EP?
I’d say I’m giving more focus to live instruments in my music since “Letter D”, and vocally I’m showing more.
Who are some artists that inspire you?
There’s so many! Anderson Paak, incredible all round artist and musician. James Blake for his unique sound, and I’m really inspired by John Mayer’s songwriting at the moment.
What else have you got in store for us for 2017?
More music first and foremost, but also more shows and some visuals!
