Barcelona-born Brain & Beast conceived their latest collection / PLAYBACK / as a hypnagogic journey, meant to inspire and interpret the blurry, unknowing state between being awake and asleep. Dramatically oversized sweaters and tees are heavily featured throughout the collection, with slogans such as ‘Life Imitates Art’ and ‘Reality”, attempting to recreate the vivid visual, auditory and tactile perceptions that occur during this state – which we think, when combined with the exceptionally eccentric makeup choices, proves to be very effective.
All about the Hood
We continue to see hoodies on the runway this season as / PLAYBACK / features matching tracksuits embellished with red stripes and studs. A unique addition to the classic staple however, is an embellished face on the back of the hood, making light of the ‘enjoyment of the useless and absurd’ that lies at the heart of the collection. A celebration of the bizarre, the collection is styled along with multicoloured pom-pom socks and red latex gloves, and brought down the runway with a diverse group of models (including a kid) using cigarettes as the ultimate accessory.
Brain & Beast reintroduces the karate belt as the perfect waist-cinching accessory. In vivid shades, including yellow and purple, the belts were out on display, layered above tracksuits, blazers and outerwear. After seeing the many hats on display at Marc Jacobs, we were especially obsessed with the embellished beret, which seemed right at home, paired with a red bandana around the neck.
