Playlist: The Parrots

Madrid based noisemakers The Parrots break down their favourite tracks of the moment for us.

Having met while studying at university, The Parrots (Diego Garcia, Alex de Lucas and Larry Balboa) are a rock’n’roll band in the charismatic, retro mould of yesteryear. With hot guitar licks, scorched vocals and the wild hair and mustaches to match, the trio have been not-so-quietly gaining a reputation thanks to their shared 7″ with fellow Madrid-exports Hinds, not to mention for their raucous live sets at festivals including SXSW and Great Escape.

The group are set to release their much awaited debut album, Los Niños Sin Miedo, later this summer, which was laid down by the coast in Cadiz – the pleasures of Spain, ‘ey? – with a little help from the aptly named sound engineer Paco Loco, and is set to establish The Parrots as a serious name on the international music scene: even if the boys themselves are, thankfully, anything but serious, something evidenced by the playful tone and rowdy energy of their latest video “No me gustas, te quiero“.

With that in mind, the boys have done us the honour of putting together a playlist of their favourite tracks from the bands they’ve met and loved over the past year or so: take it away lads.

One of the things we love about playing around is to meet new bands and being able to talk to them. It’s special ‘cause obviously you share lots of things, normally in a high level of drunkenness, and immediately relate with them. Here’s a list of the bands we discovered recently, some of them have become friends, others we just can’t stop listening to

Dream Wife – “Kids”

We saw this band at Great Escape Festival this year and fell in love with them automatically. Met them for a day and had lots of fun, partied inside a Photo Booth like crazy… I miss them every day.

The Orielles – “Joey Say We Got It”

Met them a year ago at a show in Leeds and they were the nicest ever. We exchanged 45´s and when I heard it back home I was really impressed. I’m really excited that they’re doing some shows with us in September!

Virgin Kids – “Cracks In A Colour”

These guys are making lots of noise now in London, playing lots of shows and we crashed into each other for a few times until we met properly… Every time it was like, ‘we know you??’ Count on them to share some beers!

The Shivas – “You Make Me Wanna Die”

This song is the catchiest song I’ve heard in ages. Discovered it through Ade from Hinds like two years ago in a parking lot in Benicassim and pfff it hasn’t gone out of my head yet. Got lucky to play with them last week here in Madrid and showed them the places we hang out.

The Make Up – “They Live by the Night”

We haven’t actually met Ian Svenonius, but always felt we were related in some kind of way, one of my favorite songs all time and a personal anthem (like this whole album). It was great getting off a shitty job, hearing this and suddenly feeling like I could destroy everything
