Formed in New York City, Lion Babe are the neo soul duo that the world has been missing. Comprised of singer/songwriter and performance artist Jillian Hervey and instrumentalist/producer Lucas Goodman (aka Astro Raw), Lion Babe plug the gap that modern funk and soul have needed filling. Looking towards an eclectic and extensive mix of influences for both their sonic elements and visuals, the duo’s enthusiasm and futuristic high-energy production creates a blend of RnB, funk and soul that draws you in and makes you wish it’ll never end. After releasing their debut album “Begin” in February (which they worked on with Pharrell Williams ), a string of singles including “Jump Hi” with Childish Gambino and a self-titled EP, Lion Babe have become famed for their infectious energy and modernisation of neo soul, taking the internet by storm.
Lion Babe’s brand new mixtape “SUN JOINT” demonstrates perfectly the duo’s talent and their ability to create music that hits the sweet spot where funk, soul and RnB converge. The 11-track tape is all feel good, organic vibes, and combines all the influences that Lion Babe look to, such as The Beatles in their Sergeant Pepper-era or the melting pot of New York City, and take them into their blend of funk tinged melodies.
Even though their sound falls into the funk/soul/pop label, “SUN JOINT” is far more than a simple re-hash of elements from these genres; Lion Babe take neo soul and bring it into a modern context with a unique twist and unexpected elements. It’s all resoundingly feel good – and that’s something we can unabashedly get down with.
While playing at Glastonbury Festival (mud ‘n’ all), where they performed tracks from “SUN JOINT” such as “Silver Cheetah”, and “Tina Turner”, Lion Babe snapped away all weekend, so check out their photo diary below.
