We get reacquainted with the young lady with an old soul in conversation with Tea Hacic-Vlahovic at Beats SoHo.
A star is born. Joined by her boy wonder brother Jaden, Willow Smith continues the Smith dynasty and takes to the stage in front of a small sea of diehard fans. In the absence of papa bear Will Smith, his protégées steal the limelight so much so I forget the link between them. Smith has a calmness about her with a badass attitude I’m just a little jealous of, “What I would say to all the young artists is trust your vision. People are going to try to push your vision aside.” Her stage presence is second to none as is her choice of outfit for the evening: a simple septum ring/ crop top combo: so effortless, so chic. Sensual and inspiring, the freestyling queen presents ‘feminism’ on a level I can accept. It’s hard to believe that at the tender age of 14 the singer has such awareness and an integrity you wouldn’t expect from a child of Hollywood. Her lyrics “How you feel is not my problem, I really don’t want you to go, but I don’t know how to stop it, go do what you have to do” are met with cheers and is the attitude women double her age would love to adopt. Endorsing authenticity, Smith’s lyrics are mostly born through freestyle sessions in the studio these days, “I used to sit down and write lyrics but I realized there were other fun ways.” In an industry brimming with uber-sexualization, Willow has marketed herself cleverly and addresses issues she feels most passionate about, “What inspires me most is what’s happening in the world and what I think people need help with most at the moment is being themselves and trusting themselves and trusting that intuition.” An undeniable girl boss.
