Wonderland chats to the Miami-based artist as he gets ready for his first solo show, kN0B0DY.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/2012\/07\/emerging-jeanpaul-mallozzi\/jean-paul-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9416\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/jean-paul-2-e1341240520513.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jean paul 2\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9416\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeanpaulmallozzi.com\/\">JeanPaul Mallozzi<\/a> as a person as well as an artist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A big dork who likes to tell stories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe your art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a little crumb of personal experience with each piece, not just from my life, but others that are around me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You have a quite distinct style where you cover faces with water colors. When did you first start this technique?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been working with it for a few years now. It came while I was making a body of a work for a show, and the work was very labour intensive and I had a mood swing in my apartment. I thought it would be a cool idea to illustrate a mood swing, but combining my love of rendering with my admiration for abstract art.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/2012\/07\/emerging-jeanpaul-mallozzi\/sprnvfallsdetail1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9417\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Sprnvfallsdetail1-e1341240567693.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Sprnvfallsdetail1\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9417\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>You signed with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marguliesagency.com\/\">Margulies Agency<\/a>. What prompted the decision and what is in the planning?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have seen what Michael Margulies has been doing for a few years now with some of the artists he is currently representing, and it has been good work. His family&#8217;s involvement with art is well known, but I admired him taking a new step into actually finding new artists and working to give them great opportunities for exposure to a broader audience. After he saw one of my pieces shown at David Castillo&#8217;s Invitational last year, he asked to sign with him. That was an easy decision to make.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your August solo show at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.101exhibit.com\/splash\">101\/Exhibit<\/a> in Miami.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s my first solo show and I&#8217;ve been working my ass off for it and its entitled kN0B0DY, it involves relationships and individual trials. It\u2019s mostly mixed media works on paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you elaborate more on the art we&#8217;ll see?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y1Y6JmW38yA&#038;feature=youtu.be\">Spring Never Falls<\/a>&#8221; is the biggest piece I\u2019ve made to date. It\u2019s 8ft feet long. The piece is about bullying, particularly girls bullying. I don\u2019t want to give too much away, cause I want people to come see it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/2012\/07\/emerging-jeanpaul-mallozzi\/tenacity-email1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9418\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Tenacity-email1-e1341240598324.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Tenacity email1\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the hardest part about putting together a solo show?<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the money one has to spend?! Making sure you have a solid body of work, that each piece can stand on its own, but also can work as a family when put in the same space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you ever seen an exhibition that changed your outlook on life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not an exhibition, but one or two single pieces of work. Correggio\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hugovandermolen.nl\/briefkaarten\/picsTsjech\/Iupiter-Io-600h.jpg\">Jupiter and Io<\/a>\u201d I&#8217;ve loved since I was 10, and while I was living in Vienna, I was about to leave the museum and I decided to take check out one room which I thought I missed, and I just happened to see it in there, and I flipped out. Also saw Bernini&#8217;s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goldaraphael.com\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2009\/04\/bernini_apollo.jpg\">Apollo and Daphne<\/a>\u201d in Rome and I cried a little. I totally admit it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any anecdote or more news you would like to share with us?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I just learned how to play darts a few days ago and now I&#8217;m a tad bit obsessed.
