Wonderland\u2019s extended family quiz style bard and\u00a0FENDI\u2019s all-powerful futurist, Karl Lagerfeld.<\/p>\n

\"1<\/a><\/p>\n

Scanning adoringly through FENDI\u2019s AW16\u00a0collection, Karl\u2019s stamp is clear: swimming\u00a0in undulating curves and pairing pastels with an earthy palette,\u00a0it\u2019s an expert\u2019s manipulation of modern tastes and classic forms.\u00a0Incomparable and ever-so-slightly intimidating, when Wonderland<\/em>\u00a0was offered the chance to interview FENDI frontman Karl Lagerfeld,\u00a0we called upon our favourite fashion friends to help. Here, the\u00a0Wonderland<\/em> team and our closest contributors quizzed Karl on his\u00a0inspirations (by which he responded with glittering pearls of wisdom)\u00a0and whether we can get a space on the guest list for our Bag Bugs.<\/p>\n

Karl, season after season, collection after collection, you tap into your\u00a0never-ending creative whirlpool of ideas. Is there a decade you either\u00a0consciously or subconsciously revisit? – Princess Julia<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think about it. I live for today, tomorrow, and maybe after\u00a0tomorrow. I like to change as well, while the world is changing. With\u00a0fashion you have to. That\u2019s what fashion is about! Also, never-ending\u00a0inspiration is the most important thing. One thing always inspires the\u00a0next. Creativity with no vision, or developed with people who have no\u00a0talent to build something, it\u2019s worthless. I am happy to say that I work\u00a0with great people who can understand and realise my ideas. It is a mix\u00a0of possibility of ideas and the possibility to make them modern, right,\u00a0beautiful \u2014 and that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

You once said: \u201cIf someone asks me what fashion is, I don\u2019t know, but 30\u00a0years later it all becomes clear\u201d. Which trends from the last three decades\u00a0has that mantra become most true about? – Jack Mills<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are no rules, trends come and go. Fashion is about the\u00a0\u201cmoment\u201d, not about museum exhibits. The best thing that can\u00a0happen to a dress is that it gets worn.<\/p>\n

In the past, you\u2019ve said FENDI was \u201cgrunge before grunge was invented\u201d.\u00a0Which subcultures or youth culture movements are you most fond of?\u00a0– Lily Walker<\/strong><\/p>\n

I like very much the Futurist movement, in particular Giacomo\u00a0Balla and Giorgio De Chirico. They were the first modernists, just\u00a0like FENDI.<\/p>\n

Do FENDI fur charms with faces count as +1 at a party?\u00a0– Tea Hacic-Vlahovic\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is The Karlito, which is a kind of fur monster inspired by\u00a0me. I\u2019m also one with a large collar, with a kind of black tie!<\/p>\n

Is there any advice you wish you\u2019d had when you were starting out?\u00a0– David Uzochukwu<\/strong><\/p>\n

What I can say today is that you always have to think that you\u00a0can do better, that you have to make an effort. I\u2019m never completely\u00a0satisfied with what I do. I always think about the next and want to do\u00a0more, because I think I can do better and improve. That\u2019s how I think\u00a0about myself.<\/p>\n

I<\/span>n the age of the influencer, what is the modern role of a muse? Do you\u00a0seek out muses with their digital footprint in mind? How do you ensure\u00a0you are not just fetishising their social media reach? – Hynam Kendall<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is very difficult to identify a specific woman. Our job is to\u00a0propose collections hoping that many women will appreciate what we\u00a0do. Saying \u201cit\u2019s for this kind of woman and not for the other\u201d, it\u2019s a\u00a0too sharp remark.<\/p>\n

Your association with FENDI stretches back far further than your work at\u00a0Chanel. What\u2019s the allure of the brand for you? Do you think the sensibilities\u00a0of the Italian woman differ from that of the French? – Richard Mortimer<\/strong><\/p>\n

FENDI is the unique craftsmanship of the best Italian artisans.\u00a0The secret is also that this Maison is rooted in Italy from the first\u00a0day of its creation, also after the acquisition from LVMH group.\u00a0That gives to the brand a unique international dimension and the\u00a0possibility to be modern and avant-garde at the same time. It gained\u00a0a global dimension with a strong Italian and rRman unique backbone.<\/p>\n

You speak so many languages, which do you think in? Do you think it has\u00a0an effect on the way your work? – Kat Jenkins<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think about it, I adapt easily. I have many personalities.\u00a0You\u2019ve spoken about being inspired by the shapes in rice fields to create\u00a0new methods of working with fur.<\/p>\n

Where was the most unexpected place\u00a0you found inspiration for the brand\u2019s AW16 collection? – Huw Gwyther<\/strong><\/p>\n

I like experimenting on materials, mixing things that are not\u00a0supposed to go together. I am against nothing. I like things to be what\u00a0they don\u2019t at first seem. For instance, the FENDI fall\/winter 2016-17\u00a0collection was a beautiful mix of materials, like fur that looked like\u00a0velvet or silk jacquard that looked like leather. Also, the inspiration \u2014\u00a0we mixed Japanese botanical flowers with gravitational waves\u2026 And\u00a0they looked so modern!<\/p>\n

I<\/span>n the 90s, you would show 200 look collections for FENDI. The collections\u00a0are still huge today, but how was the designing and creating process\u00a0back then without the instancy of communication we have today?\u00a0– Matthew Josephs<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to work with me in terms of fashion, because I sketch in\u00a0a way that [allows people to] do the dresses without me coming in\u00a0for a fitting. I have a vision, I put it on paper and the others translate\u00a0it on toiles for RTW or fur that are perfect. But my sketches always\u00a0come with a technical explanation that show the atelier what I want.\u00a0Today I can send my designs directly from my iPhone. Back when I\u00a0started there was no fax and it would take 3 weeks to ship a package\u00a0in the mail!<\/p>\n
