Jenny (right) wears top THEORY, vest NASIR MAZHAR, jeans MODEL\u2019S OWN,\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">tights (worn underneath) MY TIGHTS<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After school activities in your late teens normally include\u00a0chasing after boys and not doing your homework, but for 17-year-olds\u00a0Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth \u2014 AKA Let\u2019s Eat Grandma \u2014\u00a0their free time has, for the most part, revolved around writing debut\u00a0album, <em>I Gemini<\/em>. Let\u2019s Eat Grandma, a name the self-proclaimed\u00a0witches took from the common grammatical error, and not from a\u00a0macabre, cadaver-related hobby, are the eeriest, most magical girls in\u00a0psych-pop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Norwich\u2019s Hollingworth and Walton have been inseparable since\u00a0the age of four, and despite parting ways for most of their education,\u00a0their natural sister-like bond is hefty. Joking that they are both actually\u00a0witches, Hollingworth recalls how \u201c[Rosa] put a spell on me \u2014 I had to\u00a0join the band. I thought: \u2018Dammit, I wanted to be a lawyer\u2019.\u201d Indeed, the\u00a0duo is so in sync (both in attitude and looks) it\u2019s easy to imagine that to\u00a0the unknowing eye, they would be mistaken for twins.\u00a0Bonding over Enid Blyton\u2019s fantasy saga The Faraway Tree as\u00a0children, Walton and Hollingworth tapped into their witchy roots\u00a0and built magical treehouses to escape the real world \u2014 citing Bart\u00a0Simpson\u2019s very own oaky sanctuary as inspiration. Perhaps it was this\u00a0time spent together \u2014 immersing themselves\u00a0in a make-believe world full of the weird and\u00a0wonderful \u2014 that galvanised their tripped out\u00a0psych sound. \u201cI don\u2019t think we ever\u00a0really intended anything when we started out.\u00a0I think we were doing it all as a big experiment,\u00a0and I think it continues to grow like that,\u201d\u00a0explains Hollingworth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite their Rapunzel-like hair, Let\u2019s Eat\u00a0Grandma are anything but your average Disney\u00a0princesses. \u201cWe both play keyboards, guitars,\u00a0drums and sing. Jenny plays the saxophone\u2026\u201d\u00a0says Walton. \u201cRosa plays the harmonica, and\u00a0we both do some mandolin and glockenspiel,\u201d\u00a0Hollingworth adds. It\u2019s like they were never told\u00a0that it\u2019s hard to play more than one instrument\u00a0at once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Many of the tracks on I Gemini evoke darkly\u00a0cartoonish imagery, mixing fairy-tale-like piano\u00a0melodies with bone-chilling guitar riffs and\u00a0haunting lyrics. But it\u2019s their ability to breezily\u00a0contemplate the trials and tribulations of\u00a0modern-day life through song that, for a pair of\u00a0late adolescents, really sets Let\u2019s Eat Grandma\u00a0apart. \u201cWhat is reality?\u201d Hollingworth quizzes\u00a0when I press her on this. \u201c[The album] talks a\u00a0lot about escapism. It\u2019s got a lot of vivid imagery,\u00a0but it also takes the piss out of a lot of things\u2026\u00a0It\u2019s about how we experience the world, about\u00a0senses,\u201d whilst Walton continues, \u201cIt\u2019s about observations of people;\u00a0it\u2019s about dreams.\u201d The sound is raw, gritty, hallucinogenic, and taps\u00a0into your subconscious; it\u2019s a sound deemed psychedelic, sludgy\u00a0pop for a reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Recorded in Norfolk\u2019s Old School Studios \u2014 an ex-nuclear bunker,\u00a0which came fully equipped with lava lamps, ghosts and old analogue\u00a0equipment. \u201cThe first set of songs we wrote weren\u2019t actually planned\u00a0to go on an album together,\u201d says Hollingworth. \u201cWe were like: \u2018Well,\u00a0we\u2019ve written these now. And they were like: \u2018Why don\u2019t you release\u00a0an album?\u2019\u201d Never ones to let the bosses tell them what to do, the pair\u00a0contemplated their next move, hard. \u201cI\u2019d say we\u2019re quite head-strong\u00a0about what we want, poor them\u2026 [Our creative process is] like a very\u00a0long jam session, for ever, and ever, and ever.\u201d \u201cWe just keep playing\u00a0shit and seeing what happens. Then we do some spells,\u201d adds Walton.\u00a0Any more information about their potion-brewing, ghost-summoning\u00a0and magical chanting is not to be divulged to us mere mortals. \u201cAll\u00a0our other secrets are up our long, witchy sleeves,\u201d she jests. It\u2019s almost\u00a0like Let\u2019s Eat Grandma aren\u2019t aware that rules exist; let\u2019s hope they\u00a0never realise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Photography<\/strong>: Johanna
