We take an unbelievably chic stay at Hotel Recamier in Paris.

If you’re considering a romantic (or wild) New Year’s Eve in Paris – lucky you – then you should definitely be considering Hotel Recamier. Forget the big old dinosaurs of the Parisian Hotel scene (where do you think you are, a Wes Anderson movie?). Instead, opt for the independent and unique charm of Recamier, a self appointed Left Bank ‘bijou’ that really lives up to the quaint perfection that sometimes misused term implies.

Hidden behind the trees on Place Saint Suplice – which Dan Brown fans (are there still any?) will recognise from The DaVinci Code – it’s a cosy and super stylish little boutique hotel with some of the best interior design we’ve seen in a while. Think 20th century eclecticism with a real focus on quality details and finishing; everything from beautifully wrought mirrors to impeccable light-fittings and even extra-lush Egyptian towels are all correct and present at Recamier, which really matters at this kind of level. Fortunately, the service is no less impressive, with hand-delivered breakfast in bed (hello basket of dangerously buttery croissants and morning cheeseboard), well-pressed and attentive staff, and even an occasional appearance from the owner, veteran hotelier, Sylvie de Lattre, to be expected. If that’s not enough for you, there are even custom-made perfumes in all the bathrooms and a clutch of wonderful restaurants in the surrounding area – who wants to eat dinner in a hotel anyway? Really, it just doesn’t get much more Parisian-fantasy-land than this.
