We premiere three brilliant new low-fi videos from rapper Cakes da Killa.

We’re pretty big fans of rap extraordinaire Cakes da Killa here at Wonderland. The term “Queer Rap” is a controversial one (do disparate LGBTQ hip-hop artists need to be lumped under one umbrella term? Is that definition helpful or merely offensively distracting?), so, let it suffice to say that Cakes da Killa is a rapper unafraid to talk about his queer sexuality or, indeed, his queer sex acts – often with hilarious results. After his critically lauded (and very funny) 2013 mixtape, The Eulogy, Cakes – AKA Rashard Bradshaw of New Jersey – has gone from strength to strength. His most recent release, #IMF, put his trademark lyricism over thumping, frequently tribal, electronica: and we loved every minute.

Now he’s back in typically unconventional style, with a trilogy of videos from online-radio kings, NTS Radio, that we are immensely proud to premiere. Filmed in a park in north-east London, the three pieces see Cakes sitting in a playground, bucket hat firmly on head, spitting bars and ad-libbing (“This is the bit with the CGI snow”, “I wish I was in a car right now!”) all with his playful charm in fine fettle. The videos – “Goodie Goodies”, “High Tides” and “Drop Top” – are part of a wider YouTube series by NTS that has already included the likes of Throwing Shade, Jay Boogie, and Raekwon. So, stay tuned for more and stick Cakes’ video playlist on repeat.
