We talk Aaliyah, The Queen and all things ‘crazy’ with South London’s Syron.

"Screen

It’s safe to say we’ve been a fairly big fan of Syron ever since we saw the cropped-haired, bomber jacket wearing tomboy bounce onto the scene in 2011.

Debut offerings such as ‘Here’ and ‘Breaking’, force-fed every tastemaker on the internet to hail the songstress as the next hyped One-to-watch, and if new single ‘Talkin’ Crazy’ is anything to go by then 2015 might finally be her year.

We threw an abundance of questions to Syron, as well as nabbing some exclusive images courtesy of Photographer Christopher McCrory. Enjoy.

It seems like a fair amount of time has passed since you released tracks such as ‘Here’ and ‘Breaking’ – what have you been up too during the brief hiatus?

Since then I have done features with, Redlight and Mista Silva, released two songs ‘Three dreams’ and ‘Colour Me In’ on a label called Stranger which I had my own imprint label on called ‘Mania’, I’ve recently signed to a new label Fame Music, as well as that I was in L.A for three months writing and in Sweden and Amsterdam at writing camps too.

You seem fairly chameleon like – was it a conscious effort to amend or re-work you aesthetic and image? It seems less ‘tough’ and slightly more effeminate.

For me really I don’t feel that different, I’ll always keep the big gold hoops and super long acrylic nails, but I have been growing my hair, it’s nowhere near as long as I want it yet though. I wanna be like Rapunzel with it down past my waist!

Tell us more about your recent single ‘Talkin’ Crazy’.

So ‘Talkin Crazy’ was produced by Majestic. He had an outline of the production, and as soon as I heard it I knew I wanted to write to it for me. The song is about being in a relationship and things going wrong but the other person blaming everything on me. The chorus is pretty sarcastic.

The industry is awash with female talent at the moment – how do you plan on making an impact and bringing something fresh to the table.

There are a lot of great females out there. For me as I keep making music and videos, I want it to be pure pop. I write all my music so I want it all to have emotion and story. I dance too at live shows and would like to do some proper 90’s dance breaks in a video at some point too. I’m just planning on being myself and working hard.

If you could have written any song by another artist, which would you claim as your own?

If I could of written any song ever, Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ I think. I do an acoustic version of this in my live sets. I also love ‘Blue’ by Joni Mitchell – the lyrics are so beautiful.

If you had to collaborate with any other artists – alive or dead, who would be your ideal partner?

There are a lot of people I’d like to collaborate with who are alive – like Diplo and I’d love to write with Sia, I think both those collaborations would work well! I’m a fan of everything Sia writes, and likewise Diplo too. It would have been amazing to do a duet with Aaliyah,.
