Electro-funk Aussies, Miami Horror, have been hot on our radar since 2007. They’ve arrived brightly into 2015 with glimmering 70s hit, ‘Love Like Mine’.

"miami-horror"

Since 2007, suave, slicked back Aussie boys, have gone from strength to strength releasing a steady stream of singles. About to land at Electric Forest Festival alongside headline acts like Flume (he did that Disclosure remix), and inspired by the likes of musical legends Daft Punk, we see a bright future not so far away. Imminent, in fact.

We catch up with Benjamin from the band to talk about their latest release “Love Like Mine”. Their new track is pure feel good music, with snazzy electric synths and infectious high notes. “Love Like Mine” is a pick-me-up tune and the rest of the LP promises to be a dreamy 70s experience. Peace and love at the disco, man.

How did the band form?

Initially it started as an electronic product for myself, after collaborating with Josh and Dan on a few songs we wanted to form the live band. Aaron joined soon after.

What would you be doing if you weren’t musicians?

Something else creative, maybe film, design, drawing, opening restaurants.

What was the first record etc you ever bought?

I bought my first record pretty late, about 14 years old, I think it was The Hives for me, I loved all bands with “the” in their name, The White Stripes and The Strokes.

What can we expect from the LP? Is it all in the same vein as ‘Love Like Mine’?

No ‘Love Like Mine’ is quite different to the rest of the album. There are a lot of 70s dreamy, almost psychedelic tracks. Then a bit of funky post disco and a bit of new wave influence too.

What is ‘Love Like Mine’ about?

It was our attempt at combining elements we love from all of our 80s funk influences, Prince, MJ, Rick James. Lyrically it is quite playful, about having a crush on a girl who barely notices you.

What’s your favourite track from your album and why?

It’s a hard choice because it has so much variety. Maybe ‘American Dream’ because it has a very honest feeling and covers both the dancey and dreamy side of the album, ‘Out Of Sight’ is also a really strong one for us.

How was working with Cleopold? Is there anyone else you’d like to collaborate with in the future?

He’s a great friend and has been showing is music for a long time so it was natural that we would work together. We like to collaborate with anyone: we find it really inspiring to mix it up, bring in people from other genres.

Is there anyone you aspire to be like?

We love artists who have a really strong visual theme and overall concept to their music. An all encompassing flawless product is extremely powerful. Daft Punk are one of the only great successful examples of someone who has been able to combine music and visuals in really conceptual way. MJ and David Bowie also are also aspirational in terms of the concepts they had for each of their albums.

Is there anywhere in particular you’re looking forward to playing on your upcoming tour?

Looking forward to playing everywhere! Particularly Colombia, New York and Buenos Aires. Mostly because of the friends we have made in those places…

How would you describe your music to someone who’d never heard it before?

That’s a really hard thing to do. Something like ‘Dream Wave & Californian Disco’.

Miami Horror’s new LP ‘All Possible Futures’ is out on April 21st
