The ABC Family teen thriller is exasperatingly conflated, full of red herrings, redder herrings, and herrings of a red so bright it would make a Ferrari blush. Something about a girl being killed and someone named \u201cA\u201d (possibly the dead girl) haunting her friends via text message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so confused about the show myself,\u201d says Ashley Benson. She plays Hanna Marin, who is either the mean girl or the funny girl or the vulnerable girl. On a cold late-December day, sipping an iced tea at the restaurant within the Chateau Marmont, that citadel of celebrity, she laughs at the thought of hardly knowing what\u2019s going on in the show that\u2019s made her something of a hero among teens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s like, \u2018What\u2019s happening?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018I honestly don\u2019t know,\u2019\u201d she says with another hearty, raspy laugh. Unlike the show\u2019s liars, it is quickly apparent that Benson is brutally candid. \u201cWe film so much, I never remember anything. I\u2019ll be filming a scene, and I\u2019ll be like, \u2018Wait, why are we doing this, what\u2019s happening, and who is this person?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there are obviously a lot of people out there who do know <i>exactly<\/i> what\u2019s going on, because it\u2019s the cable network\u2019s longest-running show ever, having just confirmed a seventh and supposedly final season. \u201cI think they want to do more, and a film,\u201d Benson says. \u201cIt never stops getting bigger. I\u2019m like, \u2018The fact that you guys still like it after five seasons of not knowing who the hell \u2018A\u2019 is, I applaud you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of her role as Marin, Benson is extraordinarily popular \u2013 5.3 million fans follow her on Instagram, the tabloids tirelessly debate her love life, and she attracts attention, wherever she goes, from the show\u2019s zealous fans, many of whom have grown up with Benson throughout the show\u2019s five seasons and are now going off to college. But there\u2019s a sense that Benson isn\u2019t exactly comfortable with the pressure of fame.<\/p>\n<p ><a href=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ashley-Benson-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46032\" alt=\"Ashley Benson 3\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ashley-Benson-3.jpg\" \/><\/a><em>Black cardigan by CHRISTIAN DIOR, yellow soft straw hat and gold ring stylist\u2019s own\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeirdly, I\u2019m shy,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen people first meet me, they always think that I\u2019m a bitch. I always get called that. <i>Always<\/i>. Because I don\u2019t talk. I get really nervous in public situations, but once you get to know me, I\u2019m so outgoing, I\u2019m so loud and bombastic. I have the biggest mouth. But [at first] I\u2019m very closed off. I hold in emotions. I don\u2019t like to be vulnerable, ever. But when you\u2019re acting, you get to explore those feelings and those emotions and those moments. Acting is so fun. I love memorising lines and I love doing scenes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sighs. \u201cIf I could work and not have anyone know who I am \u2013 I know it\u2019s not possible \u2013 that would be my goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A younger Benson sought that fame, acting and modelling from an early age, having grown up in Anaheim. \u201cWhen I was little, I was such a ham,\u201d she says, blowing on a spoonful of the lentil soup that has just come to the table. \u201cI\u2019m obsessed with my younger self. I want her to be my daughter. I said anything I wanted then. I was so funny. I watch videos, and I\u2019m like, \u2018What happened to that girl?\u2019 She\u2019s not here. She comes out when [I\u2019m] drunk, or on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recalls her first brush with fame, something that keeps her grounded, when thinking of her own popularity with young people. \u201cWhen I was younger, I was obsessed with the Olsen twins. I watched everything they did, so I always go back to the time when I did that, but when it happens to you, it\u2019s weird. I just watched their movies every day. I got to meet them when they were 14. I was modelling for their clothing line and they came to set one day and I was like, \u2018Oh my God!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having a younger fan base has its perks: for one, their loyalty is often unflagging, and that can lead to future success for different projects. But, when Benson landed the lead role in Harmony Korine\u2019s R-rated thriller <i>Spring Breakers<\/i>, she found that her underage admirers might have actually hurt the film at the box office. \u201cI went to see <i>Spring Breakers<\/i> in theatres, all these teenagers were lining up with <i>How to Train Your Dragon<\/i> tickets, because they couldn\u2019t get into <i>Spring Breakers<\/i>. Me, Selena and Vanessa all have a younger fan base, so there were a lot of younger people sneaking in, so <i>How to Train Your Dragon<\/i> made a lot from us.<\/p>\n<p ><img decoding=\"async\"
