‘Queen of Prints’ Mary Katrantzou teams up with sportswear giant adidas for a capsule collection fuelled by femininity

This month sees two innovative minds collide in favour of sportswear pioneer adidas Originals’ new collaboration. Teaming up with the ‘Queen of Prints’ Mary Katrantzou, it’s safe to say we were expecting her signature blend of subversive graphics, technicolour hues and architectural shapes, fuelled by femininity, to explode in this collection, and of course they do.

Taking a trip through the expansive adidas footwear archives, it was the track shoes worn by ‘70s and ‘80s medal winners that marked the starting point for Mary’s collection that can only be described as future-nostalgia. The prints that take style notes from historic adidas iconography, in particular the laces, outsoles and eyelets of athletic shoes, translate onto silhouettes that place strong emphasis on the female form. Think an exaggerated coat-dress morphed from neoprene featuring the triple stripe, an acid bright A-line mini in textured tricot, oversized sneaker print figure-form leggings and trainers garnished with studs – from the ‘Queen of Prints’ with the fetish to embellish, we wouldn’t expect it any other way.

adidas Originals by Mary Katrantzou is in stores November 15th, 2014.
