MOOCHING. BLOGGING.\u201d That\u2019s right, as the Twitter biog of nightlife writer, designer and DJ Bip Ling suggests, she does a lot of, well,\u00a0stuff.<\/i>\u00a0And she can add \u201cthespianism\u201d to her roll call of pursuits, playing Jasmine in a forthcoming adaptation of\u00a0Aladdin<\/i>. The film\u2019s director and protagonist\u00a0is Adam Green – famed for co-fronting New York anti-folk ensemble, The Moldy Peaches.<\/p>\n Kickstarter-funded, with a cast including Natasha Lyonne and Macaulay Culkin, Green\u2019s sophomore film project is highly anticipated. The two met while they \u201cwere both DJing in Rome, about four years ago\u201d and now, exclusively for\u00a0Rollacoaster<\/i>, they chat through the project.<\/p>\n Bip wear black and green fur coat by Roberto Cavalli.<\/em><\/p>\n Rollacoaster:\u00a0When did you approach Bip about the role, Adam?<\/strong><\/p>\n Bip:<\/strong> I remember when you first texted me – I had an acting class thing on my desk. I wanted to do it, anyway.<\/p>\n Adam:<\/strong> So you were already taking acting classes?<\/p>\n B:\u00a0<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t yet, but I was literally about to make a phone call to my acting teacher, who I\u2019ve seen loads of times now. But obviously I was absolutely thrilled. And when Adam asked me, I was like \u201cAs if! I\u2019m going to be a Princess\u201d. I was over the moon.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> What made you want to get into acting?<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> I met an actress, (I can\u2019t remember her name) at an event, and she was telling me that when she acts, it\u2019s like somebody asking her to describe her favourite painting in a different body. I\u2019m quite an emotional person, anyway. I\u2019m quite intense: I can feel my emotions and then I\u2019m just a complete psychopath\u2026 but\u00a0 I can channel it in front of the camera now.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> What\u2019s your favourite line from the film?<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> When I rejected the Prince, that was so funny. I felt like a bitch. I had to say, \u201cno, I\u2019m about as arrogant as I look\u201d.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> In that scene, Bip is visited by the Prince of Monaco, who is played by Penn Badgley from\u00a0Gossip Girl<\/i>. He comes into the throne room and the Sultan has a reality show. He films it inside of his castle, and she\u2019s scared that her father is using her to increase ratings and so she rejects the Prince in front of the world. So you felt like a bitch, Bip?<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> Yeah, I was just really mean.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> So that\u2019s what we\u2019ve made her in this movie –\u00a0 a vicious rejector of men. But then that is the archetype of the Princess in\u00a0Aladdin<\/i>\u00a0in a way, you know? OK so, how was practicing lines? You came in really knowing your lines…<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> Yeah I did actually. I mean, it was all quite daunting – having like a whole script and having so many different sections or whatever. But I just read it and read it and read it and then I asked loads of people for advice. I actually asked Jude Law for some tips, and he said, \u201cremember your lines for a good actor, ask the director loads of questions and just know the story back to front and inside out\u201d. I\u2019d ask Selina Giles – who is my acting teacher – so many questions. She was telling me to record the other person in the scene – let\u2019s say Aladdin [played by Adam] – on my iPhone and listen to it on my headphones when I\u2019m on the train and stuff.<\/p>\n Describe your working relationship…<\/strong><\/p>\n B:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know what it is about Adam, but he\u2019s just a genius. Your script is simple and so funny and then your music [Green also scored the film] and the costumes – it all comes together so well.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> What did you think about the costumes?<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s the coolest thing that\u2019s ever happened – you are literally going to become a fashion legend.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> It only occurred to me today, when we were in the cave, that we are making a fantasy adventure movie.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> Yeah, exactly. I can\u2019t wait to get back onto the set now. Aren\u2019t you meant to be chasing all the girls around? And I\u2019m meant to be the girl that you can\u2019t get!<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> Despite the fact that because the whole world\u2019s made out of cardboard in the film, people are never going to believe that we made it in the corner of a little room.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> Yeah, for sure. It\u2019s mind-blowing how many things are made out of cardboard in it. I can\u2019t quite believe it to be honest.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> We even had papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 car keys made for one of the trucks.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> Yeah exactly, and Champagne. What else do you have? Oh yeah, there\u2019s a cigarette – that was pretty sick.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> It might be fun to take all the props and make a different movie, too.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> Yeah, I want to make a movie. You\u2019ve inspired me so much; inspired me to paint and make music and now make movies.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> Maybe we can make an off-shoot thing, somehing like the\u00a0Adventures of the Princess and Aladdin<\/i>, or the\u00a0Adventures of Princess Barbara<\/i>.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> I was actually thinking of making a movie called\u00a0The Princess\u2019 Day Off.<\/i><\/p>\n A:\u00a0<\/strong>The Princess\u2019 Day Off\u00a0<\/i>– I felt that way about the movie. How do you feel the film reflects the current state of fashion?<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> I think fashion\u2019s going all \u201cbell-bottoms\u201d – so it reflects it, yeah.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> We started painting on Bip\u2019s pants when she got here. We painted some pockets on Bip\u2019s butt, within an hour of her New York arrival. I painted on Bip\u2019s shoes, because I wanted them to be baby blue and you can\u2019t find that colour in regular clothes. Also, if someone spills, like, tomato sauce on the clothes, I\u2019ll just paint it over it.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> The set is incredible – it\u2019s like Adam\u2019s mind. How many sets have you made for the film?<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> Like 40, or something.<\/p>\n B:<\/strong> That is absolutely… they are the most amazing sets I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n A:<\/strong> I wanted the sets to look pixelated, so I used these four-by-four pieces of cardboard that you could arrange like tiles on a wall. It looks a bit like a mosaic to start with\u00a0 – then they get filed together, so we have this 20ft-long catalogue of all the scenes.
