The 22-year-old Brit has just launched a new video for one of the album\u2019s lead singles, \u201cBreak The Rules\u201d, which sees her dancing on top of a hijacked school bus \u2013 a pastiche of a photograph by David LaChapelle that lingered in her mind. Aitchison described her new LP on Twitter as \u201craw, pink and sexy.\u201d Add \u201csugary and dark\u201d to the equation and you get the formula for Queen XCX\u2019s own brand of rave-tinged electropop, which nowadays is informed by the likes of PC Music. The experimental London label\u2019s signee Hannah Diamond \u2013 whose breakout track \u201cPink and Blue\u201d is a robotic, shiny, hyperrealistic nursery rhyme \u2013 caught Aitchison\u2019s attention last winter, when the two swapped a few tweets. In what might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, we asked Diamond to interview Aitchison for the Mean Girls issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hannah Diamond: So you\u2019re out in San Francisco at\u00a0the moment?<\/strong><br \/>\nCharli XCX: Yeah, I\u2019m out here doing promo and stuff, and then I\u2019m off to Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: And you\u2019re coming over to London on\u00a0October 30\u00a0for a show, right?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Yeah, I\u2019m doing a show at Heaven. It\u2019s going to be really cool. I feel quite nervous about it because I haven\u2019t done many shows in the UK, so it\u2019s the place I kind of always freak out about. But in a good way, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: Everyone\u2019s gonna be so pumped for it. It\u2019s happening just ten days after your new album comes out!<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Yeah, and it\u2019s the day before Halloween as well, which is like my favourite holiday! I\u2019m really excited for this show and maybe me and my band will dress up as\u00a0<i>The Addams Family<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>H: You\u2019ve just released a new video, too\u2026<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Yeah, it\u2019s called \u201cBreak The Rules\u201d. I filmed the video in LA; it\u2019s inspired by my favourite movies,<i>Jawbreaker<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Carrie<\/i>, and this photo of Marilyn Manson in front of a school bus by David LaChapelle, which is like my favourite photograph of all time. It\u2019s the best video I\u2019ve ever done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: I love how you always stay connected with your\u00a0fans online; you always message them back and answer\u00a0their questions. Is that something that\u2019s really important\u00a0to you?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Yeah, I feel very much like I\u2019m an artist borne out of the internet and fans interacting with each other, so if it wasn\u2019t for them I wouldn\u2019t be where I am now. It\u2019s nice to be able to give something back to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: What has been the most supportive and important\u00a0<\/strong><strong>social network that helped you get your music known?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: I think it was probably a combination of Tumblr and Twitter. Tumblr is where a lot of my hardcore fans are. Those are the people who really understand everything about me. I see my Tumblr as the inside of my brain, like that\u2019s what I put on there. I feel like a lot of my younger fans are on Twitter and that\u2019s where they connect with me the most.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: I always see people messaging you calling you their queen.<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Yeah, I always have people tweeting me saying \u201cSlay queen, slay.\u201d I don\u2019t know why, but it always makes me laugh. It\u2019s funny, I always get some crazy shit on Twitter, like sexually graphic fan tweets. I always screengrab them, they make me laugh so much. It will be like, \u201cSlap me with a brick until I\u2019m dead and fuck my unconscious body, Queen,\u201d and it\u2019ll be from someone with a name like @SelenaGomezFan97!<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: At what point did you realise that things were starting to get crazy with music stuff?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: I think it was the beginning of this year. I went through a phase, to be honest I was really close to\u2026 \u201cgiving up\u201d isn\u2019t the right word, but I began to really not care anymore and I was finding it really difficult to make pop music. After the song \u201cI Love It\u201d, I began seeing a strange side to the music industry that I didn\u2019t know existed before, and I was at a point where I was feeling uncreative. But then after I wrote \u201cFancy\u201d in January, things started going a bit crazy. I went to stay with a friend in Sweden and basically sat in the dark and made a punk record, all these two minute songs\u2026 so when I wrote \u201cFancy\u201d, I felt like I got all my aggression out and I could write pop music again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: Do you have any advice for me starting out in the music industry?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: I feel like you, as an artist, have it going so right. One thing I wish people had told me at the beginning of my career, is to totally stick to my own ideas and vision and be myself. I feel like it was difficult for me because when I signed my record deal I had just turned 16, and everything was so confusing for me. I think that\u2019s definitely the best advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: Let\u2019s finish this with a quick-fire round&#8230; Favourite phone app?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Iggy [Azalea] showed me a great one called Drake Shake. You take a photo and shake it and Drake appears.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: Favourite person you follow on Twitter?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Yung Sherman from Sad Boys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: What couldn\u2019t you live without?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C: My best friend Twiggy \u2013 she\u2019s my oldest friend and she doesn\u2019t give a shit about my music career, which is the coolest thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: Has a really unexpected fan ever got in touch with you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C: Tommy Lee from M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce hit me up and was like, \u201cHey, I love your music, can I come to your show?\u201d and he came to my show in LA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H: What\u2019s your favourite thing to do to chill out?<\/strong><br \/>\nC: Watch movies, music videos and stuff.
