Daylight poured through sky-high windows over a star-studded crowd of cheery modern sophisticates: Allison Williams, Lily Aldridge, Ivanka Trump – even Paris and Nicky Hilton. The turnout was a fitting display of female power: this collection was about showcasing women. There was nothing new or attention-grabbing – just fun, flirty clothes for the woman with a passion for lazy afternoons, and perhaps, a love of Brigitte Bardot.

Re-visiting Côte d’Azur

Florals and oversized gingham throughout spoke of whimsical, outdoorsy fun – the hapless innocence of picnicking, and easy living. The palette was fresh – plenty of white, mixed with brights such as royal blue and canary yellow – with the silhouettes suggesting a laid-back 60s glamour. There was a baby-pink toile mikado shirt-dress, a black-and-white gingham shift with yellow sequins, and crop-tops galore, including a cropped variant of von Furstenberg’s signature wrap dress, with a black ribbon tied above a tanned, Rivera-ready midsection.

“Parole, Parole”

Emerging from a milk-white bougainvillea canopy, strolled the heirs of Bardot’s healthy joie de vivre, ranging from icons like Naomi Campbell and Candice Swanepoel to newcomer Kendall Jenner, all of them with cheeks glowing, and their thick, bouncing hair let down.

The happiest woman amongst them, however, was Diane von Furstenberg herself. At the very end, she waltzed dreamily out into an audience of beaming friends and fans, drifting through the aisles to the classic French duet “Parole, Parole,” and lovingly caressed a dozen hands and cheeks – pure joie, indeed.
