"TEEN"

Any great band evolves. And even though TEEN have released some excellent and acclaimed music in their first few years of existence, they knew they were still discovering their voice — in more than one sense of the word. Cue: ‘The Way and Color’ – TEEN’s second album, a mesmerising creative breakthrough with four key components Teeny Lieberson’s voice, Katherine Lieberson’s minimalist rolling drum beat, Boshra AlSaadi’s lithe, sinuous bass lines, and Lizzie Lieberson’s irresistible glitchy synth hooks. The music is filled with overlapping countermelodies of vocals and synth lines; even Katherine’s drums are hooky, so that the songs become ingenious interlocking sonic mantras.

The Way and Color has its share of darkness — fear, regret, and loss are all in the picture — but it’s always redeemed by the sheer soulfulness and powerful ingenuity of the music, and the way Teeny always sings even the darkest lyrics with rhythmic and melodic daring. Sometimes recalling the sound of post-millennial R&B, TEEN embody one of that era’s signature features: bold, visionary, female musicians. It’s music with heart, soul and brains, and TEEN is not afraid to do it their way.

Today we premiere the video for ‘Tied Up Tied Down’, the second single from TEEN’s sophomore album ‘The Way and Color’, out now on Carpark Records. Having teamed up with The American Standard Film Co. the video offers a warped take on the summer beach movie. Loosing herself to the thrills of teenage delinquency, the girl then violently beats her own iniquity to death – a spacey new wave take on 50s Americana. Check it out.
