Arabian Nights meets the hyper-real man-made megalopolis. Karl Lagerfeld takes his guests on a journey to Dubai for Chanel Cruise 2014-15

On Tuesday Karl Lagerfeld transported his Chanel Cruise guests to the pearl of the United Arab Emirates, The Island in Dubai, for another of his signature immersive interlocking ‘C’ branded experiences. Set against the Arabic sunset within the shadows of mashrabiya with Dubai’s epic man-made megalopolis as the backdrop, Lagerfeld re-imagined traditional elements of oriental art using contemporary silhouettes and clean-cut lines. Truth be told it was only a matter of time before Lagerfeld took to the hyper-reality of Dubai for inspiration and what a success it was.

Arabian Nights translated onto the catwalk favouring trousers – skinny, wide and trompe l’oeil all in attendance – whilst elements of modern industrial Dubai were present through a plethora vibrant prints reminiscent of mosaic tiles and the embellished skyline dress which closed the show. Perhaps a nod to the topography of Dubai, a hyper-industrialised city embedded within the historic Arabian sands steeped in culture. Seventies vibes also permeated the hot air when it came to make-up and the ultra-volumised hair styles. Lagerfeld re-invented the Arabic princess, whilst being respectful of Middle Eastern culture, creating a collection which was glamorous, refined and utterly feminine.

Follow the journey #chanelcruisedubai
