I had never, at that point in my life, cried so much.&#8221; Danish singer M\u00f8 is recalling a traumatic childhood incident &#8211; the day that Geri left the Spice Girls. &#8220;I was obsessed with them. I had all the albums, postcards, everything,&#8221; laughs the singer. &#8220;Funnily enough, they were the ones that got me thinking about a career in music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Listen closely enough, and you can hear the influence of the fivesome in M\u00f8&#8217;s music &#8211; electro indie dance-pop that blends emotive vocals, layered spiky samples and hap-hazard beats. Her October EP <i>Bikini Daze <\/i>alchemised Grimes-esque Pro Tools pop with a Lykke Li-esque Trans Europa drawl. In 2014 she\u2019s lined up collaborations with two of the world\u2019s biggest DJs &#8211; Avicii and Diplo.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00f8 spent much of her life applying \u2013 and being rejected \u2013 from music schools. &#8220;I applied like three times, but they wouldn&#8217;t even put me in the running because I was too &#8216;different,'&#8221; she recalls. &#8220;They wanted me to sing like Aretha Franklin, and at the time I was in my punk phase.&#8221; That &#8220;phase&#8221;, inspired by an adoration of Sonic Youth, led her to tour the world as part of punk duo MOR for five years. &#8220;It prepared me for what&#8217;s happening now, but it was so much more underground &#8211; we were mainly playing squats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Picture-72.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28416 aligncenter\" alt=\"Picture 7\" src=\"\/\/media.wonderlandmagazine.com\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Picture-72-e1394809486499.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M\u00f8\u2019s upcoming album <i>No Mythologies To Follow <\/i>&#8211; out February 24 \u2013 draws on MOR\u2019s diaffected lyrical themes. &#8220;It&#8217;s mostly about being young and restless and struggling to find yourself in society,&#8221; she says. The record, she concedes, will be a continuation of what fans have heard before, &#8220;but it will bring something new to the table with hip-hop and soul references.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And what of her followers \u2013 does she have any wild-eyed superfans yet? &#8220;On Social Media, you really discover the psychopaths.
