Photography by Michael Mayren

Theres not many young photographers that can say they have support from two of the worlds biggest fashion mogels. As a face of Diesel Reboot under the wing of Nicola Formichetti, Michael Mayren has just that. We met up with Michael to talk about photography, Nicola Formichetti and all things Diesel.

WONDERLAND: Hi Michael! So how did you get involved with Diesel?

Michael Mayren: I first met Nicola in New York a few years ago. He approached me separately about this project around the time that he announced he was joining Diesel.

How did you find working with Nicola?

A pleasure. On a personal level, he’s a really great guy. And he’s an amazing person to work with.

As a photographer was it strange having your picture taken for the campaign?

It’s always interesting for me to be photographed as I’m really interested in how other people work. It was an honour to be photographed by Inez and Vinoodh. They are incredible photographers and really lovely people.

How long have you been taking pictures?

My mum was studying photography when I was in my teens so there were always cameras about when I was young but I’d say I started taking a bit more seriously about 5 years ago.

What inspires the pictures you take?

It’s really hard for me to pinpoint as I’m constantly taking inspiration from everything. Growing up in the north definitely has input on how I cast. I like to photograph people who have a bit of a story rather than someone who just looks good.

How do you find the boys you photograph?

Usually on the street or in boxing gyms. But anywhere really, sometimes on facebook or people get put forward to me by friends.

I just found out that you have a pet squirrel!! Where did you find him?

He’s more of an adoptee than a pet. I’ll let him go when he’s ready. His name is Curtis. I was shooting for Diesel and Rollacoaster magazine in a boxing gym in Kings Cross and he was hidden under the boxing ring covered in dust so I’m his dad now.

Too cute. Do you plan to take pictures of him?

Yes. We’re shooting him in Marc Jacobs for the next issue of Rollacoaster magazine.

Super exciting! Thanks Michael!

Michael Mayren shot by Inez and Vinoodh for the Diesel Reboot Campaign
